Anne Marie Wandrey, 87, of Grimes, IA died peacefully on March 10, 2023, surrounded by her family at MercyOne Hospice, Johnston, IA. The family will receive friends 5-7pm Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at Iles Westover Chapel where a Vigil Service will begin at 7pm. A celebration of life Mass will be held at 10:30am Thursday, March 16, 2023 (Anne's birthday) at St Pius X Catholic Church, Urbandale, IA. Burial will follow at Sunny Hill Cemetery in Grimes.
Anne Huppenbauer was born on March 16, 1935, in Chicago, IL. She grew up in
Forest Park, IL and graduated from Alvernia High School in 1953. She graduated from St. Anne's School of Nursing in August 1956 becoming a licensed Registered Nurse in November 1956. She worked in Dyersville, IA and Dubuque, IA hospitals mainly in labor and delivery but helped in all areas of the hospitals as needed. She was very proud of her profession and took wonderful care of her patients. She also worked for Meisch Chiropractic in Dyersville, IA, for 20 years before retiring in 2006.
Anne was an avid gardener. Her main focus was daylilies, even creating varieties of her own. She has shared many daylilies with family and friends. In fact, she had a daylily named for every family member including grandchildren. It was her desire to have her love for daylilies passed on as her legacy.
Anne was involved in social justice and volunteered at the Urbandale Food Pantry, St. Joseph Emergency Family Shelter and the Catholic Worker House. She had a special place in her heart for the underprivileged and underrepresented populations and accepted all people. She was a woman of deep faith and a member of St. Pius X Catholic church in Urbandale, IA.
Anne married John Wandrey on November 16, 1957. They moved from the Chicago area to the family farm southwest of Dyersville, IA, where they raised eight children.

Ankeny, IA; Mike (Amy) Wandrey,
Norwalk, IA; Phil Wandrey,
Omaha, NE; Carol (Jim Olson) Squires,
Cedar Falls, IA; Barb (Emilio) Mendoza, Grimes, IA; Geri (John) Harris,
Fort Collins, CO; Lynn Wandrey, Grand Blanc, MI; niece Michelle Huppenbauer Flores and nephew Christopher Huppenbauer, both of the Chicago area. She is also survived by Brad Squires and Sharon Wandrey.
Grandchildren include: Brad Wandrey, Crystal (Drew) Walker, Tim (Rachel) Wandrey, Haley (Zach) Vance, Claire (Grant) Silliman, Joshua (Nicole) Wandrey, Jordan (Britta) Wandrey, Jessica (Nate) Meyer, Kirsten Wandrey, Nicole Wandrey, Rachel Wandrey, Katie (Jackson) Lashier, Adam (Ali) Squires, Matthew (Emma) Squires, Isaac (Marilin Rodriguez) Squires, Tessa Mendoza, and Isabel Mendoza.
Great-grandchildren include: Graham and Adela Walker, Colette Wandrey, Eleanor Vance, Jackson and Colton Wandrey, Addison Meyer, Ella and Hadley Squires and Baby Vance expected June 2023.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Walter and Lillian Louise (Gallo) Huppenbauer, her brothers, Walter and Bernard Huppenbauer, daughter-in-law, Sandra Ries-Wandrey and two babies in heaven, Frances and Kelly.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations in Anne's honor may be directed to Mount St. Francis in Dubuque or Center for Social Ministry or St. Pius X Catholic Church.
