Annie Lou Free, a beacon of strength and independence, passed away on March 16, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on August 27, 1942, Annie lived a life characterized by her unwavering commitment to her family and her remarkable ability to express her thoughts candidly, often with a smile. She was born in Clanton, Alabama on August 27, 1942 to the late Thomas Houston Wright and Maggie Wright.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Lenard Free; sons, Larry Free and Keith Free; grandchildren, Eric Free, LaTonya Free, Mary Lou Owens and Leslie Gail; great-grandson, Connor Free; sons-in-Law, Tommy Owens and Doug "Bo" Molett; sister, Faye Hopkins and brother, Walter "Snooks" Wright.

Annie, who was known affectionately by her maiden name, Wright—because she was, indeed, always Right—was a matter-of-fact person who navigated life with a clear vision. With an open heart, she loved her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and even her great-great-grandchildren more than anything in this world, pouring her energy and affection into their lives. She believed in the importance of punctuality, often stating, "If you are on time, you are late," a mantra that reflected her vibrant and pragmatic approach to life.

Her strong-willed nature was matched only by her warm spirit, and she embraced the joys of life with enthusiasm. Annie delighted in the challenge of puzzles and word searches, showcasing her sharp mind. Fondly remembered are the Saturdays spent visiting flea markets and yard sales, a cherished tradition that brought her immense joy and a sense of adventure as she hunted for treasures among the trinkets.

Annie’s early love for sports was evident when she played softball throughout her youth. Her fiery spirit shone through even when she faced challenges, such as the unforgettable moment on her 50th birthday when she broke her ankle sliding into third base. Yet, with her signature determination, she proclaimed she was safe—a testament to her tenacity and zest for life.

Throughout her life, Annie made an indelible impact on her community and family. As a devoted Den Mother for her daughter's Girl Scouts and Brownies and her son's sports activities, she exemplified a commitment to nurturing and guiding young lives, ensuring that she always made time for her children’s activities and her son's sports. Her legacy is one of love, resilience, and a steadfast belief in family values.

She is survived by her children, Anita Owens, Denise Molett and Richard Free (Lisa Free); thirteen grandchildren, twenty-nine great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren; brothers, Thomas "T.E." Wright and Joe Wright.

A celebration of her life will be held on Friday, March 21, 2025 at 12:00 p.m. in the chapel of Lawrence Brown-Service Funeral Home of Selma with Rev. Mike Wyatt officiating. She will be laid to rest at a later date at Pineview Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends for visitation beginning at 11:00 a.m., prior to the service. The funeral will be live-streamed on the funeral home's Facebook page.
