Charles J. Free, 92, of Kingston, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 8, 2026, with his family by his side.
Born in Jersey City, N.J., he was the son of the late Charles W. and Anna Mamrosh Free.
Charles was a member of St. Monica's Parish, West Wyoming. While living in Jersey, he graduated from Jersey City State College with a Bachelor's degree in education and went on to earn his master's degree.
A proud veteran, Charles honorably served his country with the United States Marine Corps during the Korean War.
Prior to his retirement, Charles was employed by the Jersey City Police Force, attaining the rank of sergeant.
In the late 1950s and early 1960s, Charles played semi-pro baseball for the Jersey City Otto Mack Anchors and received multiple invitations from scouts of the New York Giants Baseball Franchise. Because of his deep devotion to his family, he refused all those offers, not wanting to travel and miss precious time with his wife and children.
In addition to his parents, Charles was preceded in death by his wife, Lorraine Scavone Free, on Nov. 20, 2016; son, Richard J. Free, on Sept. 2, 2025; and siblings, Joseph, Marie, Joan, and Eileen.
Surviving are his son, Michael, and his wife, Beverly Free, Spring Brook Township; brother, Robert Free, Florida; sister, Florence Free, New Jersey; nieces and nephews; and longtime companion, Marlene Dick.
Charles's family would like to thank the Geisinger Wyoming Valley cardiology team; Commonwealth Health Hospice; and his caregivers, Mary Jo, Jodi, and Corinne, for the exceptional care and compassion they bestowed upon him during his time of need.
Relatives and friends are invited to a visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at Gubbiotti Funeral Home LLC, 1030 Wyoming Ave., Exeter. I had the privilege and honor of meeting and seeing Charles regularly attend the 8:00am mass at the Chapel of the Oblates of St Joseph. He was an amazing person with a wealth of knowledge. I surely will miss him. Not only was he a veteran of the armed forces, but also a soldier in the Master's infantry. One of his finest. May he rest in peace.
