Obituary for Anthony Lewis Amos

Anthony Lewis Amos, known as Tony, died Tuesday January 13, 2026, at Sunrise of Decatur, after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease.

Tony was born in Miami on October 29, 1940, to Dorothea and Ernest "Nap" Amos. Tony grew up in Marianna, Florida, the second of four children. Tony enjoyed growing up in this small panhandle town, where his family members were active in St Luke's Episcopal Church. Tony graduated from Florida State University in 1964. While living in Tallahassee, he worked at Moon's Jewelry Company, where he made many friends and connections. In 1964 Tony moved to Atlanta, where he began a job with First National Bank.

Soon after moving to Atlanta, Tony met Mary Gillespie. They fell in love and were married on July 16, 1966. Later Tony decided to make a career change, and he entered the training program of Eastman Dillon, in order to become a stock broker, now known as an investment counselor. Here Tony found his calling, as he thrived for many years helping others invest wisely in the stock market. Tony also served as a financial adviser to the Board of Presbyterian Homes of Georgia and the Board of Columbia Theological Seminary in Decatur.

Some of Tony's most meaningful work was at Central Presbyterian Church in downtown Atlanta. In 1969, Tony and Mary went to Central to hear the new preacher, Reverend John Randolph Taylor. Reverend Randy was very involved in the Civil Rights movement, and his ministry had a huge impact on Tony and Mary's lives. Tony served at Central as a deacon, elder, and on the finance committee. For years Tony served as Chairman of the Endowment Fund, which enabled Central to do some of its most meaningful work in community ministry in the heart of downtown Atlanta. Mary and Tony have been members of Central for 59 years, where they have raised their two sons, Lewis (55) and Edward (53). Lewis is married to Kimberly Head, and they have two daughters, Anne (18) and Elizabeth (16).

In 1971, Mary and Tony moved to their home on Arden Way, NE, where Tony loved working in the yard and planting beautiful flower gardens. He prided himself on the beauty of his home and yard, and he and Mary loved to entertain many of their friends, especially church friends. Tony and Mary also enjoyed entertaining family and friends at their home on Lake Rabun.

Besides being survived by his wife, two sons and two granddaughters, Tony is survived by his brother John Amos and John's wife Beckie, his sister Dottie Reed, and his brother Hays Amos and his wife Trish. Tony is also survived by his sister-in-law Betty Proctor and her husband Julian, his sister-in-law Sally Richardson, and his brother-in-law Richard Gillespie and his wife Belva. Tony also had many nieces and nephews who adored Uncle Tony.

Special thanks go to Maria Basto, her daughter Amber and her husband Jose Yzaguirre, and the caregivers at Sunrise of Decatur, who have taken wonderful care of Tony during his battle with Alzheimer's. Gifts in Tony's memory should be made to Central Presbyterian's Outreach and Advocacy Center at https://centraloac.org/donate/.

A Memorial Service will be held Sunday February 8, 2026 at Central Presbyterian Church beginning at 2:00 PM.
