Anthony M. Caldwell

October 4, 1947 to October 4, 2023

Anthony entered this life on October 4, 1947, at 9:12 pm., at Mercy Hospital in Chester, Pennsylvania. Anthony attended Lutheran Christian Schools from elementary through High School and John Muir High School in Pasadena. Anthony was confirmed in the Christian faith at First Lutheran Church and served in the First Lutheran Church choir and as an Acolyte. 

Anthony was an accomplished pianist and he loved jazz and Motown music.  When his teacher refused to teach him anything other than classical music, Anthony purchased music scores and taught himself to play jazz, rock and roll, and the music he loved. 

Anthony enjoyed the usual things boys love, including baseball, football, and camping.  He was a Cub Scout and a Boy Scout.  He ran track in high school and college and was on the track team at Chabot College.  He later graduated with a BA in Sociology of Social Behaviors from Cal-State East Bay. 

Anthony’s first job out of college was with the Job Corps in Pleasanton, California.  It was there that he would become fast friends with the former heavy weight champion, George Forman. 

Sensing a call to public service, Anthony joined the Peace Corps as a volunteer and served in Liberia, West Africa as a teacher.  Upon his return, he married, settled in Daly City California and began a family.

Anthony pursued a career in telecommunications and marketing, beginning at AT&T.  He rose through the ranks and became a Business Strategy Director in the Wireless Products division. His team was responsible for developing Strategy Plans for each of AT&T's Wireless Business Units and Anthony managed the team that opened the first AT&T office in South Africa.

During his tenure at AT&T, Anthony served as an elite team member involved in the $12 billion McCaw Cellular acquisition into AT&T, served as the Sales Support Manager responsible for providing sales support to AT&T National Account Sales Teams, closing sales worth $23 Million over two-year period and served as an International Account Executive responsible for all international sales activities for the American Express Corporation and its international subsidiaries, developing a yearly sales plans and the growth of $16 Million in revenue over a 3-year period.

Anthony next joined IDT/Net2phone Inc., as Vice President of International Business Development where he was responsible for international business development resulting in $72 Million of annual revenues. In this role, Anthony produced the Corporate International Business Plan, emphasizing criteria for identifying new markets, served as Net2phone's corporate interface to the State and Federal Government, co-authored the Business Marketing Strategy, minimizing duplication of effort, reducing expenses and business unit conflict, and led the international sales efforts in securing major contracts in China and the Caribbean that generated approximately $16 Million in new revenues.

Anthony’s final position in Telecommunications was with Lucent Technologies where he served as the Director of Business Development for the Optical Networking Group. As a Management Executive with Lucent, he was responsible for identifying and developing international business opportunities. market development, international and domestic government relations and sales management. During his tenure at Lucent, Anthony successfully developed, managed and sold major strategic international accounts in China and Spain generating over $70 Million in annual revenues and served as Government Affairs representative for the Optical Networking Business Unit.

He later became Lucent’s Director of Global Accounts within the Wireless Access Solutions group, where he achieved some of the proudest moments of his career. Anthony, conceived, designed and wrote an Education and Training Program that demonstrated Lucent's commitment to South Africa. The Program spanned a three-year period, touched over 16,000 students and was implemented and managed by Rutgers University. Other accomplishments included developing and implementing sales and marketing strategies leading to international wireless sales totaling $475 Million in Central and South America; leading a sales team that produced major wireless infrastructure sales in South Africa, Uganda, and Rwanda for $280 Million in revenues; represented Lucent on major Federal and State international trade missions and the National Foreign Council which resulted in $36 Million in new business; and serving as the Government Affairs representative for the Wireless Networking Business Unit, working with US-TDA, World Bank, OPIC and U.S. Dept of Commerce.

Anthony had an entrepreneurial spirit and purchased real estate and sold fur coats while building his career in telecommunications and global marketing.  Anthony also founded and served as President of Global Business Communication Solutions, LLC, a company that worked with companies to develop their marketing plans and formulate business strategies needed to enter new markets. Under Anthony’s leadership GBCS successfully developed market strategies and plans resulting in millions in federal grant funding, export revenue for New Jersey firms, and international partnerships. GBCS also facilitated access to Government agencies for New Jersey firms to get their unique product applications demonstrated and walked them through the Government contract bid process. Anthony served as the subject Matter Expert for the National Security Council; presented at Corporate Council for Africa International Conference in Philadelphia, PA; designed and presented several "How To" business conferences for New Jersey companies to understand financing, business strategies, and market entry issues; and worked with Maryland Prince George's County Economic Development Corp to study and identify solutions to revitalize the County's international economy and re-open the Foreign Trade Zone located within the County.

After retiring from telecommunications, Anthony went on to serve as Director of the Office of International Trade & Protocol for the State of New Jersey - Commerce & Economic Growth Commission. In this capacity, Anthony was part of the Secretary of Commerce's team, responsible for expanding New Jersey business internationally, encouraging Direct Foreign Investment and job creation within the State. He was in charge of implementing and carrying out the Governor's international policy for the State of New Jersey.  Anthony was responsible for $26.4 Billion in State exports and $36 Billion in foreign direct investments. He handled all international trade and protocol activities for the State of New Jersey, managed nine trade offices, including 8 overseas offices and staff. He Organized and managed major trade missions for the State which resulted in millions of dollars in new business contracts and letters of intent for NJ firms. He teamed with Federal Government agencies to provide a value-added approach to NJ business engaged in international trade.

Anthony also served as the Northeast Regional Director for the United Negro College Fund supporting offices from Boston to Washington, DC. In this role he was responsible for raising approximately $20 Million of the $100 Million annual UNCF goal.

Anthony’s final job before officially retiring in 2017 was as Vice President of the Corporate Work Study Program for Christ the King Preparatory School in Newark, NJ. Christ the King is a Catholic, college preparatory high school that provided a quality education for young men and women with limited economic resources. In this capacity, Anthony worked tirelessly with students in the program and was responsible for recruiting corporate business sponsors for student internships, procuring job placements with Corporate partners, and monitoring student performance while on the job. Anthony found this role extremely rewarding; he mentored many of the students and counseled them and their trepedatious parents. 

Anthony held numerous ancillary State and local appointments including:

Industry Trade Advisory Committee for Information & Communications Technologies (ITAC-8) U.S. Dept of Commerce & Office of U.S. Trade Representatives; Secretary, New Jersey World Trade Council; Representative, National Foreign Trade Council; Corporate Council of Africa-Member; U.S. Dept. of Commerce-Chairman, New Jersey District Export Council; Chairman- Business Development Committee- U.S. - South Africa Business Council; ITC Subject Matter Expert for National Security Council; Member of the Franklin Township Board of Adjustment for Zoning.

Anthony loved to travel and was privileged to travel throughout the world. He enjoyed jazz festivals, shopping for art and clothes and was always sharply dressed for every occasion.  He maintained enduring friendships throughout his life.

Anthony was an amazing dad who loved his children and grandchildren.  He leaves behind his daughters, Yaminah Lewis (Lawrence Justin Lewis), Kamaria Caldwell (Jess Defrees), Aaron Taylor (Step Son), Ashley Caldwell, and Jade Cates Jackson (Step Daughter); his grandchildren, Jhesina Defrees, Saija Defrees, Savion Lewis, Kyrie Defrees, and Kalani Defrees; a great granddaughter Amelia Jordaya Marie Defrees; his brother Byron S. Caldwell, Jr. (Carmen Caldwell), his sister LaJuana D. Caldwell, and “sister-cousin Desirée Walker, and a host of nieces and nephews, and cousins. 

Anthony was preceded in death by his parents Byron S. Caldwell Sr. and Ruth E. Caldwell.
