Anthony Wayne "Tony" Ebert, age 63, of Elwood, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at his residence following an extended illness. He was born in Elwood on March 4, 1961, the son of Robert and Carolyn (Welches) Rushton. Tony graduated from Elwood Community High School with the Class of 1979, where he was a phenomenal athlete; excelling in football, wrestling and track. He was a hard working laborer and heavy equipment operator in the asphalt industry for many years until health issues challenged his ability to continue doing what he loved. He went on to work part-time for the City of Elwood and assisted friends by mowing, plowing snow, and just lending a hand to friends whenever he was able.
Tony supported Elwood youth with all of his being. He was extremely dedicated, competitive, and had an unwavering passion for coaching youth football and little league baseball teams for most of his adult life along side his life long best friend Sammy Tyner. They were always the team to beat and he will always be remembered for his unique deep voice that could make every blade of grass on the football fields stand at attention. The two best buddies were unbeatable on the football fields and he will be remembered as one who made a big impact on so many athletes who continued to respectfully refer to him as "Coach" whenever their paths crossed.
Tony was a simple man who lived life to the fullest, and was an active member of the Elwood Elks Lodge for over 27 years. He appreciated the great outdoors, fishing, hunting, and traveling to dirt open wheel races and he always looked forward to the Little 500 in Anderson each May where he met his closest racing buddies for over 20 consecutive years. He was Beau Brandon's number one fan, rarely missing a race and he was always actively seeking sponsors for Beau Brandon Motorsports. Tony will be sorely missed by so many friends and family, but he will always be remembered sitting on the top row at races, patiently waiting for the green flag to fly and somewhat dreading the checkered flag to drop.
Tony is survived by his two sons, Tony (Amanda) Ebert of Frankton and Sam (fiancé Robin Crandall) Ebert of Cicero; grandchildren whom he adored, Bently Ebert, Quinn Smith, and Phoenix Ebert; two brothers, Steve (Mandy) Ebert and Mark (Kim) Ebert both of Elwood; sister, Lisa (Roger) Whitehead of Elwood; several nieces and nephews; special friends, Sam Tyner, Larry O'Bryant, Logan McCormick, former companion Leslie and her husband and Tony's good friend, Greg Hare, and so many more.
Visitation for family and friends will be on Wednesday, February 19, 2025, from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Dunnichay Funeral Home in Elwood with a Elks Memorial Service at 7:00 pm followed by a Celebration of Life to honor Tony.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to the Elwood Youth Football League or Beau Brandon Motorsports in honor of Tony through the funeral home.
