Anthony Hammes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Edline-Yahn & Covington Funeral Chapel on Jan. 17, 2026.
Anthony W. Hammes Jr., age 88, passed away peacefully on January 14, 2026.

Anthony was born in Illinois on December 11, 1937, to Anthony and Ruth Hammes. Growing up, his family lived in Wilmette, Illinois, where he and his five siblings were active in the Catholic Church. He attended St. Francis and St. George Catholic schools, earned a college degree, and proudly served in the United States Navy, USS Little Rock (1958-1962), receiving a Good Conduct Medal for service.

Anthony spent most of his professional career working in furniture sales, where he was known for his personable nature and strong work ethic. In his later years, he made his home in Puyallup, Washington, where he enjoyed being close to family and living a life centered around those he loved most.

Above all else, Anthony was a devoted family man. He is survived by his four children: Mike (Wendy) Hammes, Beth (Jim) Borgen, Katie (David) England, and Erik (Jennifer) Hammes. He was a proud and loving grandfather to seven grandchildren: Samantha Lewis, Anna Hammes, Megan McDonnell, David Hammes, Alyssa Krumpos, Amy McDonnell, and Ryan England. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia Madden.

Known affectionately as "Papa Tony," he was deeply adored by his grandchildren and by many other family members and friends who shared in that special bond.

Anthony was preceded in death by his parents, Anthony and Ruth Hammes; his former wife, Marianne Rasmussen; his sisters, RuthAnne Clark, Barb Gill, and Mary Kathryn Hammes; and his brother, Jerry Hammes.

Anthony's greatest joy was his grandchildren, and few things made him happier than time spent with them, especially if it included a slice of old-fashioned chocolate cake or a chocolate chip cookie, which perfectly matched his well-known sweet tooth.

Anthony will be laid to rest at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington, on February 4, 2026, at 12:30p.m.
