LT. COLONEL ANTHONY JEROME "Tony" SMITH, USAF (Ret.)
Lt. Colonel Anthony Jerome "Tony" Smith, USAF (Ret.) passed away on December 11, 2025, in Lake Worth, Florida. He was 68 years old.
Born on March 13, 1957, in Portsmouth, Virginia, he attended Lemoore High School, Lemoore, California where he was a stellar athlete who excelled at basketball and encouraged his family members to love the game. He evolved into an avid professional sports fan who always had either a football, basketball or track and field game on the television. He was an honored alum of San Francisco State University, California.
Tony dedicated his life to service, both to his country and to those around him. His distinguished military career began in December 1980 when he was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Air Force. Over the next two decades, he rose through the ranks with unwavering commitment and integrity, ultimately retiring as a Lieutenant Colonel in January 2001 after 21 years of honorable service.
As an Air Combat Command Officer, Lt. Colonel Smith demonstrated exceptional leadership and strategic acumen. His pursuit of excellence led him to attend and graduate from two of the military’s most prestigious institutions: the Armed Forces Staff College in 1996 and the Air War College in 1997. These academic achievements further refined his capabilities as a leader and strategist within the armed forces.
Throughout his career, he received numerous commendations recognizing his dedication and exemplary performance. Among his highest personal honors were the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, and the Air Force Commendation Medal—testaments to his unrelenting perseverance and steadfast devotion to duty.
In the years post military retirement, he continued his life of community public service working within the Bay County School System until retiring again in 2023. Beyond his public service accomplishments, Tony found great joy in nature and outdoor pursuits. He loved hiking and camping under open skies, often spending peaceful hours fishing or birdwatching. These quiet moments reflected a man who appreciated both discipline and serenity.
Tony is survived by his loving wife, Dorothy of 24 years; his parents, James and Marie; his brother Charles (Amy); and sisters Deborah and Geraldine. He also leaves behind step-children Matthew (Millie) and Courtney (Bryant), along with cherished grandchildren, Matthew Jr. and Maxine; a niece Angela, and nephews Jamil and James.
Tony was predeceased by beloved grandmothers, Mary G. Smith and Josephine Stephens.
A graveside service with military honors will be held at 1:00 pm on Friday, January 23rd 2026, at South Florida National Cemetery, 6501 South State Road 7, Lake Worth, Florida (Lane 3).
