Antonino Vittorio Longo (February 22, 1939 – January 12, 2024)
Antonino Longo (Nino) was born in Castellammare del Golfo, Italy in 1939 one of seven brothers and sisters, son of Vincenzo Longo and Anna Mortellaro. He immigrated to the United States in 1962, settling in New York, NY where he met his wife Antonina (Ninetta) Filippazzo. They were married in 1963.
In many ways, Nino lived the classic tale of the Italian immigrant in the US, coming to New York after some turbulent life events in Sicily with minimal financial means. At the behest of his father, he set off to begin a new chapter in his life. Like many Italians that emigrated to the United States, he initially came as a student to study at university, but quickly focused his attention to finding work and settling in his new country. Without strong English language skills, the prospects were limited. With help of family, Nino found an "entry-level" position in a print shop in New York City, sweeping floors and sorting paper. Thus began Nino's long career in the printing Industry in New York City.
Nino was known to be meticulous in his work and quickly and methodically learned how to operate a small printing press through observing co-workers, advancing his position at work. His dedication and work ethic became his hallmark traits, eventually earning him the status of "Master Printer." During the 1970s, Nino worked at various companies in New York during the week and moonlighting as a printer and running a maintenance/cleaning operation for JFK airport service vehicles on the weekends. By 1980, he was asked to join the Nugent Organization Inc., a small start-up printing company owned by Paul Nugent, and became a partner in the company. Eventually, Nino became the sole owner of the company after Paul's retirement. The Nugent Organization Inc. grew into a prominent and successful printing company, operating with approximately 20 employees, running numerous printing presses, and producing materials for major companies like Sports Illustrated, Conde Nast, Calvin Klein, Archdiocese of New York, and many more.
Nino had three children, Vincenzo, Stefano, and Anna Maria. Vincenzo joined Nino at the printing company, and they worked together for 15 years until Nino's retirement in 1999. In his retirement, with Ninetta he moved to upstate NY to be close to their daughter Anna Maria. There Nino enjoyed gardening and spending time with his grandchildren. He has a long-time passion for soccer, particularly Italian soccer, watching every game he could and following it closely. He passed on a love for sport and gardening to his children and grandchildren. Nino spent his final years in more peaceful existence in the countryside watching sports and news, growing vegetables, and eating his wife's Sicilian cooking. After a long struggle with polycystic kidney disease, Nino passed away peacefully in his home in the presence family at the age of 84. Nino is survived by his wife, his three children, ten grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.
