Archie "Spike" Earl Bennett, age 74, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 10, 2025, at home surrounded by his family.
Born on April 18, 1951, in Lumberport, West Virginia, Archie was the son of Deloris Cook and Marlyn Bennett. From an early age, he was known for his strong work ethic, his big heart, and his ability to make everyone feel like family.
Archie spent much of his life in South Florida, where he owned and operated his own irrigation business. He took great pride in his work, knew every inch of the trade, and was respected for his dedication and willingness to help anyone who needed it. He believed in doing things the right way, showing up for people, and treating every customer like a friend.
At home, Archie was a dependable and loving friend, father, and husband. He helped raise his children with patience, humor, and unconditional love. He was hands-on in every way, making dinners, getting the kids ready for school, and ensuring that family came first. Both he and Betsy were deeply involved in their children's lives, especially their sports and activities. Archie spent countless hours coaching baseball, umpiring games, serving on the league board, and working the concession stands. His kids could always count on seeing him at every game, event, or important moment.
Outside of work and family, Archie was a true outdoorsman. He loved to fish and he really, really did. He would have spent every day on the water if he could. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, and making his yearly return to West Virginia for the season. Archie had a special gift for connection. Five minutes with him and you were not just an acquaintance. You became a lifelong friend.
Archie is survived by his loving wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" Bennett of Ann Arbor, and his seven children: William J. Bennett; Athena Paige O'Brien; Jamie Rector McIntyre (Joseph); Andrew Bennett (Christine); Allison Abrams; Thomas Bennett (Kayla); and Laura Bennett.
He is also survived by his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who brought him immense joy. Each one held a special place in his heart, and he loved them with every fiber of his being.
Archie is further survived by his brothers-in-law, David Rumford of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Tom Rumford and his wife Martha, of Ann Arbor, Michigan, who were not only family but close lifelong friends. He leaves behind his niece, and his nephew both of Boca Raton, Florida. He is also survived by his uncle, James Bennett, and many cherished cousins from the Bennett family in Clarksburg, West Virginia, all of whom shared a deep bond with him.
Archie will be remembered for his generosity, loyalty, humor, and unwavering love for his family. He was the kind of man who would give his last dollar if it meant helping someone else. His legacy lives on in his children, grandchildren, and in everyone whose lives he touched with kindness and strength.
A memorial service will be held on December 5, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Harmer Funeral Home, 300 Pike Street,
Shinnston, WV 26431.
