Obituary published on Legacy.com by Beinhauer Family Funeral Homes - Peters Township - McMurray from Oct. 7 to Oct. 8, 2021.
Age 87, of Prosperity, PA, and formerly of McMurray, PA, died September 29, 2021 after a brief illness.
Born in Canonsburg, PA on August 10, 1934 to the late Arch and Velma McIntyre, Arch grew up with a great love of the outdoors including fishing, hunting and shooting that extended throughout his life. He also grew up working with his own father building homes and working on cars in the 1940s and 50s instilling in him a strong aptitude for mechanics, construction and engineering; abilities that would serve him well throughout his career. Arch graduated from Canonsburg High School at 1952 and briefly attended Penn State University but left immediately at the outbreak of the Korean War during which he served as both a tank commander and drill sergeant in the US Army. After leaving active duty, he resumed his studies graduating from Ohio University on the GI Bill with a degree in mechanical engineering and later earning an MBA from the University of Pittsburgh.
After college, Arch joined the engineering and construction firm of Henry F. Teichmann, Inc. in McMurray, PA as a draftsman; eventually becoming the president of the company and leading it through substantial growth including international expansion and achieving a dominant global market share for the design, engineering and construction of glass plants. Under his leadership, the company was one of the first American companies to undertake significant business in China beginning in the 1970s along with additional expansion in South America, Africa, and the Middle East. His business travels took him to job sites in dozens of states across the country and overseas to Venezuela, Puerto Rico, Thailand, Egypt, Germany, and elsewhere. Among his large projects in the Middle East was the construction of a glass plant in Iran; the timing and circumstances of which conspired to leave Arch and several colleagues in Tehran in the wake of the Iranian Revolution and subsequent Iranian hostage crisis. Arch and his colleagues successfully exfiltrated themselves becoming among the very last Americans out of Iran. He later led a successful lawsuit against the government of Iran which was favorably adjudicated at the World Court in The Hague.
Arch retired from Teichmann in 2019 enabling him and his wife Susan (née Gilchrest) to enjoy an active and civic life that included a passion for animal rescue and the Humane Society, shooting sporting clays, and quietly helping people in the community in need. Arch was also passionate about golf, skiing, motorcycle racing, scuba diving and aviation as an accomplished private pilot. Despite his notable accomplishments, to many he will be remembered for the very private and personal assistance he routinely provided to those in need. Never seeking to be recognized or re-compensated, Arch's selflessness and generosity were well known. Active to the very end, he enjoyed a full and happy life of accomplishment, generosity, and the love of his family.
Arch is survived by his loving wife of 20 years, Susan McIntyre (née Gilchrest) of Prosperity, PA; his son Scott McIntyre and his wife Stephanie McIntyre of Great Falls, VA, and his grandchildren John and James McIntyre of Great Falls, VA, sister Ann Crain of Houston, TX, and several nephews and nieces in Texas, California, Ohio and Indiana. In addition to his parents, Arch was predeceased by his wife Gretchen McIntyre to whom he was married for 25 years until her death in 1985.
