Archie Palos, 89, of Jerseyville, IL, passed away peacefully on the morning of October 19, 2025, at Jerseyville Manor. A father, grandfather, brother, and a friend that will be remembered for his kindness, generosity, quirky sense of humor, stubbornness, and charismatic personality.
He was born on November 16, 1935, in Sparks, Nevada, to the late Jobita and Esteban Palos. As a young adult, Archie worked for railroad and construction companies and eventually worked in a hospital, where he met his first wife, Alyce. They married on June 23, 1967, and had a son a year later. In the early 1970's, Archie and Alyce made the long, cross-country trip from the west to Alyce's family farm in Hamburg, Illinois, with 3 children, a dog, and a cat in a station wagon.
Putting down roots in Illinois, Archie found his true calling in service to others. He joined Jersey Community Hospital, first as an orderly, and later for 25 years, as a dedicated social worker. After his "retirement", he opened and operated The Willows in Fieldon. Once The Willows closed, he and Alyce remained in their home, enjoying visits from friends, family gatherings and spoiling their cocker spaniel, Lady. Archie was a devoted caregiver to Alyce when she fell ill and remained by her side until her death in 2009. He was blessed to find companionship again, marrying Phyllis Delp five years later. They shared a life together until her passing in 2024.
Even as his dementia advanced, Archie's charismatic personality endured. He moved to High Pointe of Jerseyville where his familiar charm allowed him to connect with old friends and welcome new ones.
Archie was a man of many passions. He loved tending to his garden, reading, repurposing odds and ends into unusual art pieces, traveling, tinkering in his garage, and learning new languages. Above all, his greatest joy was spending time with family and grandchildren.
He is survived by his children: Matthew Quentin (Leslie) Palos of Jerseyville, IL; Kirk Barry of Oakham, MA; Lesa Spinazzola of Oakham, MA; and Laura Rodriguez of Rackerby, CA. He also leaves behind his granddaughters: Kelsey, Delaney, Sierra, Sydney and Savana; his sisters, Luz and Ginny Palos of Roseville, CA; his brother Gene of Roseville, CA; any other family members from various states.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife Alyce; second wife, Phyllis; his siblings; and his grandson, Kiernan Spinazzola.
Per his wishes, cremation rites were accorded by Gress, Kallal and Schaaf Funeral Home. No service will be held at this time. A private ceremony will be held later.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to High Pointe of Jerseyville Activities Department.
The family wishes to extend their deepest and most profound gratitude to the staff at Calhoun Nursing and Rehab, Jerseyville Manor and High Pointe of Jerseyville. Your compassion, remarkable patience, and unwavering support for both Archie and his family will never be forgotten.
