Arend Van Roggen

Arend van Roggen, a longtime resident of Kennett Square, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully in Boxborough, MA, Saturday August 2, 2025. He was 97 years old.
Arend was born in Nijmegen, in the Netherlands, and was the son of Cornelis and Christina (Weijler) van Roggen. He was raised in Nijmegen and Rotterdam in the Netherlands. He received a Doctorate of Physical Chemistry from University of Leiden in the Netherlands in the research area of dielectrics followed by a Ph.D. in Physics at Duke University in the research area of paramagnetic magnetic resonance. Arend and his wife Lien Nio Oei van Roggen emigrated to the US in 1954 and settled in Kennett Square Pennsylvania.
Arend was a research scientist at DuPont in Delaware. After 25 years at DuPont he became the Editor-in-Chief of the IEEE Transactions on Dielectrics and Electrical Insulation until his retirement in 2002.
Outside of his research work, Arend enjoyed gardening, listening to classical music, and travelling all over the world with his wife Lien.
Arend was predeceased by his wife Lien. He is survived by his son, Walter van Roggen and wife Tina van Roggen of Boxborough, MA, and 3 granddaughters: Natalie van Roggen of Cicero New York, Elena van Roggen and her husband Jacob Beckstrand of Kelso Washington, and Juliana van Roggen and her partner Travis Morgan of Walla Walla Washington.
