Argertha Nerora Jackson was welcomed into this world on July 26, 1934. She departed this world on October 3, 2025.
Argertha, called ‘Gert,” was born to the late Joseph Jackson and Virginia Chellie Jackson in Florence, South Carolina, and she was the last surviving member of her immediate family.
“Gert,” or “Aunt Gert” as some called her, attended Wilson High School in Florence, SC, where she was an excellent student and an outstanding basketball player. She received many awards and recognition for her academic abilities, and for her athletic skills on the basketball court. She later also played tennis in college.
After graduation, she attended NC A&T University in Greensboro, NC, and graduated with a B.A. in Business. She later studied at Winston Salem University, receiving a Master’s degree in Business; and in August of 1973 she was awarded the degree of Master of Science in Education – Guidance.
Her professional journey included teaching at Mathers Academy in Camden, SC, Eden High School in Eden, NC, Shelby High School in Shelby, NC, concluding her teaching career at Montgomery Arts and Science High School in Silver Springs, MD. Argertha devoted her career to nurturing the minds of young students, and facilitating their growth and academic pursuits. During her educational career, Argertha also served as Chairperson of Business Advanced Studies where she developed and prepared a college level business curriculum for high school students.
“Gert” loved to travel all over the US and the world, she loved Bingo, and she loved going to the casino – where she was a very lucky lady.
Argertha was preceded in death by her father Joseph (Joe) Jackson, mother Virginia Chellie Jackson; sisters Jean Jackson, Mildred Jackson Fair, Annie Jackson Dingle, Bernice H. Jackson, and brother Russell James Jackson; brothers-in-law Rev. Sammy Dingle, Lawrence James Fair, and one nephew Lawrence Russell Fair.
Gert’s life and her memory will be forever cherished by her nieces Sandra Fair Harvin (James) of Elgin, SC, Rev. Dr. Norma Fair-Brown (Otis) Woodstock, GA, and Miriam Fair Durham (Ike) of Irmo, SC.; and one nephew, Russell L. Fair of Lexington, SC. She will also be forever in the hearts of two god-sons, and a host of great nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives, and friends.
Argertha’s strong-will, her infectious independent spirit, her impeccable style, her persistent smile - even as she faced physical challenges - and her love of the finer things of life (especially her Jaguars), endeared her to many and she will be truly missed.
Please keep the family of Argertha N. Jackson in your thoughts and prayers.
