Arlene Dowd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bocco Funeral Home on Mar. 27, 2026.
Arlene Joan Dowd (née Frieman) passed away peacefully on Thursday March 19, 2026. Arlene was born December 10, 1937, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to the late David and Mary Madeline McGrath Frieman.

A lifelong Philadelphian at heart, Arlene wore many hats with employers ranging from a bank and a penitentiary, to a dentist office and a high school, but she ultimately built a rewarding career at Temple University, where she worked in both the Psychology Department and the Fox School of Business. She dedicated many years to the University's community before retiring in 2012 at the age of 75. During her time at Temple University, she developed a deep and lasting passion for Temple Men's Basketball, building relationships with coaches, players and staff alike. Her love for the sport was evident to all who knew her, which she carried with pride throughout her life.

Arlene's devotion to Philadelphia sports began in childhood when her father took her to Phillies games at Shibe Park/Connie Mack Stadium, sparking a lifelong love for the team. That passion never faded, and she cherished trips to Spring training in Clearwater, Florida, minor league games in Reading, Pennsylvania and was a proud Phillies' season ticket holder for several years. Arlene was an avid artist, and her talents left a lasting mark with both sports organizations as well, with her work displayed at Citizens Bank Park and Temple University's Liacouras Center-tributes to her enduring love for both the Phillies and Temple basketball program.

Though Arlene and her family lived in many places over the years, her heart was always drawn back to Connecticut, where she held countless cherished memories. In the summer months, she could often be found at Candlewood Lake, enjoying the beach and the peace it brought her. She also held a special place in her heart for Maine, where she spent her childhood summers on her family's farm with her aunt, uncle, and cousins-memories she spoke of often and lovingly shared with her own children during annual summer visits.

Arlene was a woman of many passions and talents, with an unrelenting energy. She was actively involved in theater, local politics, and the Methodist Church communities, as well as various non-profit and charitable organizations. She found joy in painting, reading, cooking, and baking; she was known as a wonderful cook who brought people together through her meals, along with her artful conversation and humor. Rarely seen without a cup of coffee in her hand or smile on her face, in Arlene's welcoming presence no one remained a stranger for long.

Above all, Arlene will be remembered for her warmth, creativity, strength, and deep devotion to her family, her interests, and the places she loved most. Arlene valued time with her grandchildren who adored her. She had a special gift for nurturing and caring for the many pets who were fortunate enough to be part of her home. To her, animals were never "just pets"-they were family, each one cherished, comforted, and loved without condition.

Devoted sister of the late Donald Frieman, James Frieman and Frances Hewton.

Arlene is lovingly survived by her children Jennifer Kovic (Tom Kovic), Andra Sweeney (Jim Sweeney), Kraig Dowd, Leigh Dowd, and Kevin Dowd. She is survived by her beloved grandchildren: Jack Sweeney, Madeline Sweeney, Gillian Sweeney, Hannah Kovic, Julia Dowd, Kaden Dowd, Sawyer Placek and Skylar Placek, who will continue to honor her memory and the traditions she cherished. She is survived by her sister Susan Davis.

Private services will be held to honor Arlene's fulfilling life.
