Michael Dowd Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Farley Funeral Homes and Crematory - Venice on Mar. 17, 2026.
Michael E. Dowd was born September 17, 1934, in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and from that day forward he lived a life that was rarely simple, often stubborn, occasionally hilarious, and always unmistakably his own. He was an imperfect man like every one of us, but he carried a lifetime of grit, intelligence, and contradiction in a way only Michael could.

He married Lois Jean in 1957, and although she passed in 1996, there's no honest way to tell Michael's story without saying this plainly: Lois was the backbone of the family. She raised their eleven children. Mary, Patrick, Matthew, Michael, Paul, Daniel, Katherine, Kelly Marie, Elizabeth, John, and Stephen while Michael poured his energy into building his career. She held the home together with strength, humor, and patience that could have qualified her for sainthood long before the Church ever recognized such things.

Michael loved his children deeply, even if tenderness wasn't a language he spoke easily. Each of those eleven kids went on to grow into adults with their own spiritual paths, beliefs, and definitions of meaning, many very different from their father's traditional Catholic practice. In its own strange way, that, too, is part of his legacy: he raised a large, wildly diverse family full of thinkers, questioners, feelers, skeptics, believers, and wanderers. A family that despite the noise, the chaos, and the uneven expressions of love remained bound together.

His life was full of unexpected edges. He graduated from University of Detroit with a degree in marketing in 1958. He found long term involvement with Alcoholics Anonymous and helped found Everest Academy in Clarkston, Michigan, projects fueled by faith, hope, and the restless energy that defined him. He had a lifelong habit of buying and restoring old houses, turning the flawed and worn down into something livable again, a theme that probably says more about him than he ever said out loud.

After moving to Florida, he managed free concerts for the Sarasota Jazz Club, explored his artistic side at the Venice Art Center, and remained a steady presence at Mass at Epiphany Cathedral. And of course, he smoked cigars often, proudly, and for longer than anyone expected.

Professionally, Michael spent nearly four decades in the automotive industry, beginning at Ford Motor Company in 1957, then joining Chrysler in 1967 until his retirement in 1994. He lived through the rise, decline, reinvention, and frustration of the American auto industry and never hesitated to share his blunt, often passionate assessments of it all. Whether people agreed with him or not, he had a remarkable ability to see the big picture and to argue about it.

Those who knew Michael knew he wasn't always easy. Affection could be uneven, impatience could flare, and connection sometimes required effort. But he showed love through work, provision, and presence even if the softer parts of love were harder for him to access. His life, like all lives, was shaped by the wounds he carried and the strengths he built from them.

He leaves behind a large family, countless unfinished ideas and projects, and a legacy that, like him, is messy, flawed, complicated, and absolutely real.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at Epiphany Catholic Cathedral in Venice, Florida Friday, March 20th at 11:00 am. Visitation will be held at Farley Funeral Home on Thursday March 19th from 6-8pm Interment will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield, Michigan at a later date.
