Minister Armand Ramos Smith, affectionately called Mondi, was born in New Bedford, Massachusetts, on October 24, 1938 to Elaine Smith and John Ramos, alongside his beloved best friend and twin sister, Anna. He peacefully transitioned from labor to reward on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, in Evans, GA.
After losing his mom at age 2, Armand was raised by his paternal aunt, Maria Silva and cousin, Anna Oliver-Barrows in Springfield, MA where he was educated in the public school system. It was Springfield, MA where he began his own family, entered the Ministry, and was employed at the Ludlow Mills Factory. Minister Smith served proudly in the United States Army. He was a chef at Martha’s Vineyard and served President Kennedy. In the early 1990s, he moved to Thomson, GA to be closer to his baby brother. He worked as a chef in various restaurants and often said that his secret for tasty food was “common sense”. He was an avid musician, self-taught and was part of the gospel group, The LB Gospel Aires. He also ministered at Thankful Baptist Church, Glascock County, and served with Rev Luther Rogers Jr, New Hope Christian Church. He later moved to Augusta and joined the Macedonia Church of Augusta where he was part of Abba’s Army under the mentorship of Bishop Doctor Gregory M. Fuller. While there, he met and married the love of his life, Bette Curtis. Minister Smith enjoyed our family’s weekly gathering discussing a book titled My Weekday Word. He passionately spoke about God’s word. In addition to loving his family, he enjoyed traveling, fishing, playing cards, watching football and wrestling.
He leaves to cherish his memories to his beloved wife Bette Smith of Evans, GA; three daughters, Deborah Perry, Denise Elaine Smith, Diane Marie Smith all of Springfield, MA; one son, Armand 'Manny' (Nicole) Raymond Smith, Jr. of E. Hartford, CT; five bonus children, Rachelle (Eddie) Watson, Barry Wedlock all of Evans, GA, Dwight (Malinda) Wedlock of Cincinnati OH, Hampton (Monica) Wedlock of Hagerstown, MD, Maestro (Nola) Curtis of San Francisco, CA; 33 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren and 21 great-great grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Smith of Hartford, CT; and sister-in-law, Patricia Smith of Augusta, GA as well as a loving host of other relatives and friends. Among them, devoted nieces, Nicole (Robert) Wiggins of Augusta, GA; Quenda "Chicken" Whitecloud of Atlantic City, NJ.; and Geena Lovey “Canty” (James) Parker of White Plains, MD.
