Arni T. Dunathan

Arni T. Dunathan, 89, of Escanaba, passed away on Sunday, November 30, 2025 at Sunny View Adult Foster Care in Gladstone.
Born to Clint and Haldora (Hagen) Dunathan on May 2, 1936 in Escanaba, he went to Escanaba High School graduating with the Naval ROTC Scholarship. Arni then attended Northwestern University, beginning a lifetime journey in education. A master's degree at Michigan State University led him to Bay College where he taught education before leaving to pursue a Doctorate at the University of Utah. Hired by the University of Missouri, this associate professor grew into a full professor, Fulbright Scholar, and published author. His first book "The American BB Gun" found a place in the Smithsonian Institute and is still recognized as the authority on the history of the classic air gun. Returning to Bay College in the 1980's, he taught communications and theatre. In retirement he published his second book "The Encyclopedia of Marble's Knives and Sporting Collectibles".
On May 26, 1985, Arni married Sharon J. "Sherry" Ross in Escanaba. On November 19, 2019 she entered into eternal life. Additionally, he was preceded in death by parents and infant brother, Jule.
Arni was loved by many and leaves behind his children, Clint (Marcia) Dunathan of Escanaba and Dari (Mike) Cranford of Columbia, MO; stepchildren, Kelly (Dwayne) Hammersmith of Gladstone, Jody Horwitz and Mark Hill both of Escanaba; grandchildren, Cara (Travis), Tony, Bryce (Kiley), Maddie (Henry), Morgan (Michael), Riley (Kenny), Tanner, Justin (Lindsey), Jessie (Tyler), Hunter, Kasey, Kyle (Luke), Peyton, Abby, and Sophie,; several great grandchildren; sister, Sara Murphy; and niece, Maggie Murphy-Pomeroy.
With a passion for the outdoors, he enjoyed bird hunting, fishing, and deer hunting. His storytelling made his adventures come to life and he shared them with his children, grandchildren, generations of students, and countless friends eager to hear more. Some people just seem larger than life. Arni was one of those people.
A celebration of life is planned for May 26, 2026 on Arni and Sherry's anniversary.
