Arnold Mathias Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by O'Connor Mortuary - Laguna Hills Chapel & Mortuary on Jun. 7, 2023.
My father Arnold "Sonny" Mathias, was incredible individual who left an indelible mark on the world of storytelling as an esteemed writer, teacher, father and proud Italian Catholic.
Sonny's journey as a screenwriter was one filled with creativity, imagination, and an unparalleled ability to capture the essence of the human experience. With every script he penned, commercial he wrote and directed he transported us to worlds both familiar and fantastical, touching our hearts and stimulating our minds. His stories had the power to evoke a wide range of emotions, to provoke thought, and to challenge our perspectives.
Throughout his 87 years of life, Sonny graced the silver screen with his brilliance, Magnum PI, Night Rider, and MTV videos. Arnold's scripts not only entertained us, but they also moved us, leaving a lasting impact on our hearts and souls. Arnold was a professor for multiple years at UNLV. He was loved by his students as he engaged them in his experiences in commercial writing, print ads and being a creative director at such agencies as Doyle Dayne Bernbach.
Beyond his professional achievements, Sonny was a man of great integrity, and patriotism. After graduating college he enlisted in the Army and was at the Bay of Pigs. His family, not far away in Florida slept while he and other troops kept them safe.
Arnold was not spared from adversity. The cruel irony of a writer having dementia. My father no longer able to write with flowery language and instead trying to remember the names of those he loved most. Despite his fading memory he could never forget his cat Kelly. He fostered Kelly from The Ark of San Juan rescue and quickly became a foster fail. The cat offered unconditional love and laid by him until his passing.
Dad, thank you for sharing your incredible talent with the world. Thank you for the stories that will continue to ignite our imaginations and stir our emotions. Your words have left an indelible mark on our hearts, and we will forever be grateful for the gift of your storytelling.
May you find eternal peace in the realm beyond, surrounded God and by the characters and stories that were born from your brilliant mind. Rest in peace, dear Sonny, and may your legacy shine brightly, guiding future generations of storytellers.

I did not realize until a week or so ago that your anniversary of your passing is coming around. I have felt you so strongly around me, to the point of where I have seen you almost manifest physically. But that would be you as a very strong soul. I can still hear your voice, I can still see us laughing. I can see that you're beginning to understand the spiritual barrier between Earth and the spirit world I also see, and feel that you will be helping many people down here. Thank you so much for sharing your compassion, your talent, your creativity, and just your soul with all of us. I know that you will always be with all of us in spirit.

I spent some time living with you guys in Crestwood during the early 70s. Your dad was one of the kindest, generous people I have ever met.

Dear Robin
Would love to say hi to you - you probably don't remember me as the last time I saw your Dad was in the 70's when he lived in the Hollywood Hills - so many memories of that house - Thanksgiving - ....we last spoke a few years ago - was thinking of him today and found that he had passed. Very sad news -
I know you and your children were the joys of his life - that's what he talked about when we last spoke. With much love Barbara Pizik

Dear Robin, What a beautiful tribute to your precious father. He was the warmest, funniest, most loving man to everyone, and he will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always. At the age of five, I remember him visiting our home in South Florida, and I thought he was the funniest person I had ever met. I have always maintained that thought. He was clever and witty and he expressed himself with an equal amount of intelligence, love and thoughtfulness in both his writing and his conversation. He was a loving presence in all of our lives. He treasured and valued every member of his large extended family, but you were his heart. You held his heart from the first moment he held you, and he loved to share stories of you. He would beam whenever he spoke of you. The love and pride he expressed for you was truly something to behold, admire and treasure. He treasured and spoke of your family always. Such a proud Dad (and deservedly so). "Uncle" Sonny was such a dear friend and confidant to our Uncle Joe. Their cousin bond was stronger than any brothers could have been and I know that they are laughing out loud together, sharing their jokes and insights once again. Sending you love Robin. You are his beautiful legacy. Love always, Kristen and John Davis

Dear Robin, I was so very sorry to hear about the loss of your father, my "Uncle Sonny" as we always called him. He was such a treasure to our family. His stories, his laughter and his warm loving heart will be missed by everyone who knew him. I hope you know how proud he was of you, and your beautiful family. Wishing you sweet memories that will last a lifetime. With much love, Susan Plati Stead

I remember our 'almost trip' to Mexico... And I remember laughing about it afterwards at the spaghetti factory in Hollywood while we were having dinner. Laughing about the afterwards story that you told me so hard that I almost fell out of my seat.
And so many other fun things that we were able to share, way back when.

A true dear friend, and a wonderful person to me. I know that you are always with me in spirit.
Thank you Sonny for being an influential, and inspirational person for me in the early part of my life, and for years after!
We shared some of the best laughs I've ever had in my whole lifetime, to this day.
I can still feel you with me in spirit. I treasure everything that I got to experience then, and look forward to your insights from heaven now!

With much love, life and light
