Arthur "Art" Anthonijsz
15 April 1943 – 17 May 2025
We lost a pillar of the community on 17 May 2025 at the age of 82; a loving husband, father,
grandfather, brother, and friend. Art was born on the Indonesian island of Java on 15 April 1943 to Max
and Daisy Anthonijsz. Although born in Indonesia, he spent most of his youth in The Netherlands.
In 1960, Art moved to California in the United States. 5 years later, while serving in the United States
Army, he became a US citzen. When his service was completed in 1965 he returned to Montclair,
California.
After working a few jobs Art found an opportunity at Fasson Products where he worked for over 30
years.
During the 1970s, encouraged by his wife, Art became involved with the American Youth Soccer
Organization (AYSO). Soccer, at this time,was barely known in the area. His involvement grew over
the years. He also became invovled with other soccer leagues, but AYSO remained his core focus. As
the years went by through his playing, coaching, refereeing, and training, Art became instrumental in
bringing the game to the region. He also traveled around the country and visited other counties offering
better training for coaches and referees.
When not involved with soccer activities Art also enjoyed music as evidence by his large and varied
record collection. He also enjoyed, cooking and, in his later years, came to have a passion for
gardening.
Through his loyalty to his family and job, as well as through his dedication to his interests, Art came to
personify the American dream. Also, by sharing his interests, Art was able to demonstrate his ability to
uplift others regardless of their age, race, or gender.
Art is survived by his wife of nearly six decades, Bonnie Anthonijsz; his son Steve Anthonijsz and his
wife Karla Karpowicz; his son Dan Anthonijsz and his wife Tracey Anthonijsz-- with whom he was
especially close; his sister Erna Morris; his grandsons Brandon Anthonijsz and Skyler Anthonijsz; as
well as a host of nieces and nephews. He also leaves behind a legacy of decades-long friendships.
