Gunner, you were a tough and brave Submariner, and always a gentle man. I was a young, naive and inexperienced kid right out of high school in a small Illinois coal-mining and farming community. You took me under your wing aboard Nautilus and got me to do things I'd have never have attempted without your guidance.
Thank you for your mentorship. Rest in peace, Shipmate.

Gunner Callahan! Over the years, I have often thought of your wicked sense of humor and your kindhearted leadership when I was a 19 year old Sailor aboard Nautilus!
Sailor, rest your oar!

I had the great good fortune to serve in Nautilus with 'Gunner' Callahan from 1957-1960 and a finer person was hard to find. As a young and tender seaman, he instructed me in the finer arts of ship painting, line handling, and all deck hand skills. He was patient beyond belief, always there with a guiding hand and soft words in a time when some senior petty officers could be crude and forceful. I never heard him utter a bad word about anyone. He was the consummate leader and I looked up to him as such.
He will be greatly missed by all who knew him, either in the navy or in civilian life. Every time I bend on a knot of some kind or chip and paint something, I think of him. Fair winds and following seas, 'Gunner'. J.C. Yuill

My sincere condolences go out to the entire Callahan family on the passing of Arthur. Art was truly a legend in the annals of Labor Relations at Electric Boat. He was an early mentor to me and so many others during his career. I will never forget his unique sense of humor and his dedication to his family, job and St. Bernard High School. Godspeed Arthur!

My sincerest condolences to the Callahan family. I worked with the " Gunner " in Labor Relations for over 10 years. He brought a sense of humor to a most stressful job. The Gunner was a good man who was most dedicated to his family, country and US Navy. I will always have fond memories of him.

Mrs. Callahan, Bill, Peter, and Dick,
Sorry for the loss of Art. I just saw him two weeks ago in my travels in Groton. He was always encouraging in whatever I was doing in my career and politics. Always a close friend of our family and working with my father at Electric Boat, at Sacred Heart or the beach club, Art always looked at the positive in people. I understand your loss and may he rest in peace.

Mrs. Callahan and family, please accept my deepest sympathy on the loss of Mr. Callahan. It was a pleasure to see him every Sunday as usher at Mass. He was such a kind and gentle man to all of the Grasser's always. He will be missed.
