Arthur "Dean" Bailey

December 16, 1927 – March 28, 2026

Arthur "Dean" Bailey, a cherished member of the New London community, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2026 at the age of 98. Born in Ashland, Ohio, on December 16, 1927, to Donald "Vic" and Ellen "Irene" Balley, Dean was a man of honor, service, and dedication.

After graduating high school, Dean proudly served in the United States Army during World War II. His military service was spent primarily In Washington, D.C., where he worked as a driver for General Leslie Groves of the Manhattan Project, contributing to one of the defining moments of the 20th century.

Post-war, Dean returned to Ohio and became a pivotal figure in his community. He was the local Pontiac dealer for an Impressive 54 years, from 1952 until his retirement in 2006. His commitment to public service was further exemplified by his 49 years of service as a firefighter, a 23-year tenure as the New London Fire Chief and his presidency of the Northern Ohio Volunteer Firemen's Association as well as past President of the Local Rotary Club. Dean was a volunteer ambulance driver with Fireland Ambulance Service for many years starting before New London owned a proper ambulance driving a modified funeral hearse.

Dean was also deeply involved in veterans' and fraternal organizations, boasting 79 consecutive years as an American Legion member, 77 years as a member of the Masonic Temple, attaining the level of a 32nd degree Mason. His passions extended into the great outdoors, where he was an avid deer hunter, known for his skill with both bow and gun well into his 90s. In chapter two of Dean's life he and partner Yvonne enjoyed thousands of miles towing his Avion all over the country including Alaska meeting up with long time travel friends.

Dean was preceded in death by his parents, Donald "Vic" and Ellen "Irene" Bailey, and his beloved wife of 50 years, Phyllis Ruggles Bailey, who passed in 2002. He is survived by his sister, Norma Bilton of Norwalk; his children, Deana Hahn, David (Kim) Bailey of New London, and Darla (Barry) Center from South Carolina; 7 grandkids; 17 great grandkids; and 1 great-great grandkid; and numerous beloved nieces and nephews; as well as his life partner of 22 years, Yvonne Westover.

Dean Bailey's life was a testament to dedication, service, and community. He will be remembered not just for his accomplishments but for the love, laughter, and warmth he shared with all who knew him. His legacy will continue through his family, friends, and the many lives he touched.
