Art Krein, 79, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 13th at Eventide nursing home in Jamestown due to complications from end stage COPD.
Arthur Theobald Krein was born March 13th, 1946, in Edgeley, ND. Art was the fifth of seven children born to Theobald “Teddy”, Jr. and Rose “Rosie” (Bollinger) Krein. He would grow up living and working on the family farm located 5 miles SW of Millarton, ND, just off old Highway 46. Art would attend grade school in Millarton, ND before attending High School in Montpelier, ND.
Finding school “dull”, Art would leave school at just sixteen to join the Army National Guard. Following Basic Combat Training (BCT), Art would return home being assigned to the National Guard being posted at the Company A, 141st Engineer Combat Battalion, Corps in Edgley, ND. During this time, Art would also move to Jamestown to pursue work while still helping to work the family farm. After six years in the National Guard, Art would earn the rank of E8- Master Sergeant before being honorably discharged from service in 1967.
Art would first find work as a line man for the railroad, then working for Lindberg’s Concreate, and Molene Construction where he would work on crews that constructed several of the large projects of the day, including the construction of the Ladish Malting plant in Spiritwood, ND and the Civic Center in Jamestown, ND.
During this time, Art would also begin dating Helen Devereaux of Jamestown. Art and Helen would be married on March 25, 1970. The marriage would produce two children, a daughter, Dionne and a son, Shannen. Unfortunately, Art and Helen would divorce in 1983 after 13 years of marriage. It was in the mid 70’s Art would begin his own business as an independent contractor/carpenter called “A Work of Art”, the profession he would hold until his retirement- and beyond. To those Art did work for, it has been said to call him a carpenter is a misnomer- he was very much a craftsman; very skilled and passionate about his craft having an unyielding dedication to his work. As he would say, “any job worth doing is worth doing well.” It was the true passion in his life- to take a piece of wood or be given a project idea and create something only few could imagine being done.
Art was also a very skilled billiards player, being part of several local championship teams throughout the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. He was well known to “clear the table” on many opponents. He also greatly enjoyed playing guitar, socializing and sharing a beer with friends, cracking jokes and enjoying the company of family and will be greatly missed by those who knew him.
Art is survived by his daughter Dionne (Evan) Larson and grandson Benjamin of Sartell, MN, his son Shannen Krein of Jamestown ND, brother Marvin of Bismarck, ND, and sisters Esther (Jim) Officer of Gwinner ND, Della Vollmer of Drake, ND, and Carol (Gary) Ryme of Jamestown, ND and many nieces and nephews.
Art is preceded in death by his parents Teddy and Rosie, brothers Ronald and Elmer Krein, brother-in-law Allen Vollmer and sister-in law Barbera Krein.
