Arthur Phillips Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by United Funeral Service, Inc. on Jun. 28, 2025.
Arthur Jones Phillips, known affectionately to friends and family as Art Phillips, passed away on June 27, 2025, in Birmingham, AL. Born on February 26, 1941, to Huey Lee Phillips and Geneva Estelle Hastings Phillips, Art lived a life marked by service, family, and faith. His gentle nature and dry wit left an indelible mark on all who knew him.

Art's formative years set the foundation for a life of dedication and love. He proudly served in the United States Air Force, a testament to his commitment to his country. Following his military service, Art embarked on a career as a computer tech for the United States Postal Service, where his reliability and expertise were greatly valued. His involvement with the National Rifle Association reflected his belief in the importance of community and civic duty.

He married the love of his life, Marita Louise Alford Phillips, and together they built a family that became Art's pride and joy. He is survived by his devoted wife, their daughter Marita Ann Allen (Danny), their son Harrell Phillips (Tammy), and his sister Bonnie Williams. His legacy continues through his nine grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren, who will remember him as a source of boundless love and joy. Art was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Estelle Phillips Stegall, and his brother Andrew Phillips.

Art's Christian faith was the cornerstone of his existence. He was a faithful member of the Church of Acts where he was generous with both his time and giving. His love for attending church services was matched only by the love he had for his family. Art was fondly known as the "Bubblegum man," a nickname that spoke to his playful spirit and his ability to bring a smile to the faces of children.

In his younger years, Art found solace and excitement in squirrel hunting, an activity that brought him closer to nature. As time passed, his interests evolved, and he became known for his love of playing solitaire on his computer. His sense of humor, often expressed through his quick-witted and funny remarks, was a source of laughter and lightness, making him a magnet for kids and adults alike.

Art's life was a testament to his character-funny, generous, and gentle. He will be remembered for his ability to make those around him feel loved and valued. His presence was a gift to his family and to all who had the privilege of crossing paths with him. Though he will be deeply missed, his legacy will live on through the lives he touched and the love he gave.

Services to honor his life will be Tuesday, July 1, 2025, at 2:00 pm at the Church of Acts, with Bro. Charlie Ganey officiating. A visitation will begin at 12:00 pm until service time. Burial will be at Warren Cemetery in Pontotoc County. Pallbearers will be Dillon Phillips, Daniel Allen, Dustin Haley, Samuel Haley, Stephen Allen, Levi Phillips, and Andrew Phillips.

United Funeral Service is honored to be entrusted with these services.
