Arthur Simon

 

Arthur Simon was born on July 28, 1930, in Eugene, Oregon to Rev. Martin Simon and Ruth (Tolzmann) Simon. Art and his brother Paul enjoyed being part of many family efforts, including helping their father with his publications, “The Christian Parent” and “My Chum”.

After graduating from Dana College, he attended Concordia Seminary and was ordained as a Lutheran minister. He later took a call to serve as pastor at Trinity Lutheran Church on the Lower East Side of New York City. During his time in NY, Art’s heart for marginalized communities became increasingly evident. He was active in the civil rights movement, marching with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and advocated for people experiencing hunger and poverty. His work with the latter eventually led to the birth of Bread for the World. As the grassroots organization grew, Art moved the organization to Washington DC. After retiring from BFW, Art was the director of Christian Children’s Fund in DC for several years.

Art authored twelve books, including Bread for the World, Faces of Poverty, How Much is Enough, and Rediscovering the Lord’s Prayer. He was the recipient of many awards, including the Pacem in Terris Peace and Freedom Award, the Presidential Hunger Award for Lifetime Achievement, and the Leadership Award of the Center for Public Justice. Despite all of his accolades, Art will be remembered most for his immovable faith in his Creator and Redeemer, which was evident through his life of service, kindness, gentleness, and love.

Art leaves behind his wife Shirley; children Nathan, Peter (Heather), Richard, and Leah (Ras-I); grandchildren Isaiah, Amelia, RJ, and Amaria; and many other relatives and friends.
