Arthur Wendt Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Feb. 25, 2026.
GARDEN RIDGE - Early Life and Family

Arthur H. Wendt, age 98, of Garden Ridge, Texas, passed away peacefully at home and entered The Lord's open arms on Monday, February 16th at 2:08 AM, just five days shy of his 99th birthday.

Arthur was born on Monday, February 21, 1927, to Viola and Harry Wendt in Inkster, Michigan. He was the youngest of three children. His brother, Harold F. Wendt, and his sister, Violet Wendt Meitzner, preceded him in death. The family moved to Harlingen, Texas, in the early 1930s. Arthur graduated from Harlingen High School and was a proud member of the Texas A&M University Corps of Cadets in the class of 1950. He married Miss Shirley Ann Turner on September 14, 1950. Arthur and Shirley are survived by their two sons: Gary Lee Wendt of Grapevine, Texas, and Ronald Mark Wendt of New York, New York.

Service and Career

Arthur served in the US Navy during World War II, stationed in Guam and Saipan. He had a passion for aviation, held a private pilot's license, and served in the Civil Air Patrol. Later, he became the airport manager of Brownsville International Airport in Brownsville, Texas, and then Stinson Field in San Antonio, where he worked until his retirement in 1999.

Among his proudest accomplishments was achieving the rank of Colonel in the United States Air Force Reserve. After retiring, Arthur enjoyed his long-term memberships singing with the San Antonio Beethoven Mannerchor and Liederkranz choirs.

Later Years

After losing his beloved wife Shirley of 57 years in 2007, Arthur married Mrs. June Stokes in August 2010. Their marriage brought comfort, companionship, and travel during their widowhood. June passed away in May 2019.

Legacy and Acknowledgments

Arthur will be missed by his sons, several nephews and nieces, countless friends, and caring neighbors: Mrs. Nancy Fisher, Shelly and Scott Saffran, their children Steven, Selma, and Scarlet, and his most beloved friend, Mrs. Renate van der Weide.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the tireless caregivers of Visiting Angels. Special thanks go to Ms. Megan Massey, who was Arthur's steadfast support, as well as Ms. Ann Njambe, Ms. Denise Grant, Ms. Sonya Wiley for their warm and excellent care. Thanks also to Mr. Jonathan Leeper of Senior Start physical therapy.

The family will receive friends from 6:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, March 8, 2026, at Porter Loring Mortuary North, 2102 North Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, Texas 78232.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, March 9, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. followed by a reception at Mt. Calvary Lutheran Church, 308 Mt Calvary Dr, San Antonio, TX 78209.

Interment will follow at 2:00 p.m. in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery, 1520 Harry Wurzbach Rd, San Antonio, TX 78209.
