Asa Charles Crow, 59, of Eagle Butte, passed away Monday, September 29, 2025, at Cheyenne River Health Center, Eagle Butte.

Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. MDT, Friday, October 10, 2025, at Pioneer Hall, Dupree, SD, with a procession from the two-mile corner at 10:00 a.m. Burial will follow in the Dupree City Cemetery.

Asa Charles Crow was born on December 27, 1965, to the late Larence R. Crow Jr. and Betty (Clown) Crow at the IHS Hospital in Eagle Butte. He grew up in the Dupree area. The family lived in a scatter site home nine miles west of Red Elm, SD. They had many pets to keep them company, including dogs, cats, sheep, pigs, chickens, and horses.

Asa also lived in the On The Tree area with his maternal grandmother, Lucille Young Black Dog. Grandma Lucille thought very highly of Asa and made him a beautiful star quilt to honor him as the first grandchild to graduate from high school.

While in school, Asa participated in football, basketball, and, for a short time, golf. Asa humorously described golfing as "a long walk interrupted by hitting a small white ball with a stick." That marked the end of his golfing career.

Asa enjoyed reading, watching movies, listening to music, and laughing and joking with everyone.

He also took an interest in John Finn's karate class, attending with his four cousins: Stephen and Andy Brings Plenty, and Reno and Gino Clown. Through his dedication, Asa earned a brown belt.

Asa worked at the elderly manor in Eagle Butte, assisting elders with their daily routines.

"He had a personality that naturally attracted people and always prioritized others before himself. He was fun, fair, and compassionate-his presence alone brought comfort and healing to those around him. The grandchildren, nieces, and nephews he watched over the years felt a sense of hope and safety, defining what it really means to be a family."- Jalen Little Thunder, grandson

"My uncle Asa was a very kind man who helped raise me from birth. He showed me lots of love and never pushed me away. I thought the world of him. On December 27, 2017, I gave birth to Roy'L Pearl on his birthday. Asa lived with us, and the bond between Pearl and Lala Asa grew so strong. Pearl loved her Lala Asa more than anything in this world. She was always so excited to see him and talk with him. When my little family went on a trip to Florida, Pearl was so worried about her Lala Asa that she would call him every night. My uncle was a smart, kind, and loving person. We will miss him so much."- JoRae "Butchie" Veit, niece

"Asa was always a kind-hearted person."- Monica Gomez Jewett, cousin

Asa was named after his great-great-grandfather, Asa Crow–Hard to Kill, who was married to Malinda Crow (also known as Comes Out The Cloud). Their son, Charles Crow, married Mary Jane Eagle Chasing. Their son, Lawrence R. Crow, married Lucille Young-Asa's grandmother, who lovingly made the star quilt for him.

Asa is survived by his special granddaughters: Roy'L Pearl Hollow Horn and Morning Star Crow; brother, Kirk Crow, Sisseton; sisters: Tammy and Lolly Crow, Eagle Butte; nieces: Frankee, Sabra, Joni, Karyne, and JoRae Veit, Bo-Koo Crow, Brenna, Crow, Koran Lara, Mary Barse, and Heidi White Tail; nephews: Colt and Roy Veit, Kirk Crow Jr., Brett Price, Melvin Price, Matthew Goodsell, Shawn Schweitzer, Lewis White Magpie, and Xavier James.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents: James and Anna (Red Bird) Clown, Lawrence Crow Sr. and Lucille (Young) Madison; father, Lawrence Rufus Crow Jr.; mother, Betty Lou (Clown) Crow; brothers: Lou James and Lawrence Rufus III; sister, Brenda Veit; aunts: Alma, Carol, Mary, Pat and Phoebe Clown, Mary Jane Lafferty, and Janice and Georgianne Madison; and uncles: True Sr., Richard, Carlin, Stuart, and Larry Clown, and Arnold Madison.

Luce Funeral Home of Gettysburg has been entrusted with Asa's arrangements.

A Funeral Service was held on October 10, 2025 at 11:00 AM at Pioneer Hall, Main St. in Dupree, SD 57623
