Athena Papazoglou (Atsalis), 95 of Perth Amboy, passed away on Sunday, December 25, 2022, at
her home with her family by her side.
Athena was born in Vessa, Chios, Greece. She came to Perth Amboy soon after she was married
in September of 1955 and has lived there for over 67 years. She was a seamstress with Phoenix
Fashions for many years before retiring in 1992. Athena was a devoted member of Saint
Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church in Perth Amboy and was a member of the Ladies
Philoptochos Society and a member of the Senior Club. She was an active volunteer for the
annual church festival for many years and many other church functions. In 2011 she received
the "Mother of the Year" award from her church. She enjoyed spending time with her family,
gardening, cooking and baking all the traditional Greek dishes and delicious desserts that she
shared with many.
She is preceded in death by her loving husband Fotios of 62 years, her loving parents Demetrios
and Eftihia (Katiothis) and her siblings, Yanni, Maria, Vasilis and Everthiki.
She is survived by her daughters Despina and her husband John Steinert and Demetra and her
husband George Peppe, adored grandmother of Christopher, Stephanie, Nicolette and George,
Sister-in-law Aryero and her husband Michael Patras and aunt of many nieces.
Visiting is on Thursday, December,29, 2022 from 9am to 9:45am at St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Chruch. A Liturgy will begin at 9:45, burial will follow at Alpine Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in memory of Athena
Papazoglou to St. Demetrios Greek Orthodox Church, 41-47 Wisteria Street, Perth
