Augustus Thorburn White

Augustus Thorburn (Toby) White passed away at his home in Houston, Texas, on November 19, 2025 with his wife, Maureen, by his side. He was born in Yokohama, Japan on October 19, 1950, the son of Augustus Ronald White and Anne Cleveland White.
Toby received his Bachelor of Science degree from New College in Sarasota, Florida, received his Ph.D. from Johns Hopkins University and received his J.D. from Yale University before pursuing a legal career in Houston, Texas.
Toby's life was filled with a driving curiosity for all things. He read voraciously, constantly learning and exploring every topic in the world and created the highly regarded website www.palaeos.com.
Toby was tremendously proud of his three sons: Abe, Sam and Adam. Dinner discussions were always lively with differing views, lengthy questions and thoughtful answers. Toby was pleased that they are each doing well in their chosen profession.
Toby spoke endlessly of his three grandchildren: Violette, Joshua and Gillian. He will miss not being with them as they continue to learn and grow, but he knows they will be well.
Toby is survived by his wife, Maureen McGrath White; sons, Augustus (Abe) and wife Shellie, Samuel (Sam) and wife Emily, Adam; grandchildren, Violette, Joshua, and Gillian; and sister, Susan Godsil Whitcher and her husband John.
A memorial service for family and close friends will be held at a later date. Toby's ashes will be interred at a private ceremony in Harwich Port, Massachusetts.
