My friendship with Austin dates back to the late 1940's. We attended the same elementary, St. Francis de Sales, 1951 and Cardinal Hayes High School, 1955.

We enjoyed many fine evenings in Murphy's Pub and on weekends playing tag football in Central Park. With the passing of time, we went our separate ways. Many years later we did reconnect with Austin and Lucy with reunion dinners at Murphy's Pub and get togethers in Florida with Ron and Ruth Janis and Tony and Agnes Frankfurter. Austin was a big fan of the Giants and Notre Dame football.

I would like to relate an episode in Austin's professional career that I will call "The case of the disappearing tomatoes". The former dean of discipline at Cardinal Hayes and now a pastor at a Bronx church, Fr. Jablonski, affectionately known as Jabo, had a small garden where he grew tomatoes. He noticed they were being trampled on and called the local precinct and asked to speak with the officer in charge. This was Austin who told the good father he was putting his best people, Cardinal Hayes graduates, on the case. In short order the culprits (neighborhood kids) were "apprehended", and the case was solved. May you Rest in Peace, Austin,
Tom Walsh
