Austin Mulryan of Tappan, NY passed away on July 10, 2025, at the age of 88.

He was born at home in the Bronx, NY to Mary (MacDonald) and John of County Mayo, Ireland. At the age of 6 his family moved to Manhattan. Thus began a childhood filled with adventures in Central Park, getting in trouble at the Met for leaving peanut shells on the floor and being part of a junior high school radio forum that was sponsored by the New York Times.

Austin was a graduate of St. Francis de Sales School, Cardinal Hayes High School and John Jay College of Criminal Justice. He proudly served In the United States Army from 1955 to 1957, including a tour in Korea.

In 1959, Austin joined the New York City Police Department. It was a calling that lasted 39 years and spanned from Tompkins Square Park to Tokyo. Among his proudest moments were being a Sergeant in the 19th and Brooklyn North, a Captain in ESU, Mulryan's gym in the 43rd, the turnaround in the 47th and being the coordinator of the NYPD's first community policing initiative (CPOP). Austin retired as an Inspector and as second in command of Bronx Detectives.

Austin had 35 years with the love of his life Lucy (Peracchio), before she departed in 2006. They are the proud parents of a daughter, Kristina O'Keefe (Patrick).

After 33 years in Pearl River, Austin started a new chapter in Tappan. He devoted the last 20 years of his life to being a Poppie to his beloved grandchildren Dan, Catie and Emma. He was there for trips to the beach, basketball games, performances, and other childhood milestones. His favorite thing was to sit outside with his radio and wait to hear about their day.

Our family will be forever grateful for his "breakfast club" at Hogan's Diner led by John Dillon and John Creegan.

Austin is also survived by his beloved sister Mary (Jim) Hickey, niece Maureen Hickey, nephew James Hickey (Jill), and great nephews Owen and James. He was predeceased by his wife, parents and brothers John and best friend William.

Calling hours are from 4 to 8 pm on Thursday, July 17 at Wyman-Fisher in Pearl River, NY. 10 am funeral mass at OLSH (St. John Henry Newman) in Tappan, NY on Friday, July 18 followed by a burial at St. Anthony's cemetery in Nanuet, NY.

My friendship with Austin dates back to the late 1940's. We attended the same elementary, St. Francis de Sales, 1951 and Cardinal Hayes High School, 1955.

We enjoyed many fine evenings in Murphy's Pub and on weekends playing tag football in Central Park. With the passing of time, we went our separate ways. Many years later we did reconnect with Austin and Lucy with reunion dinners at Murphy's Pub and get togethers in Florida with Ron and Ruth Janis and Tony and Agnes Frankfurter. Austin was a big fan of the Giants and Notre Dame football.

I would like to relate an episode in Austin's professional career that I will call "The case of the disappearing tomatoes". The former dean of discipline at Cardinal Hayes and now a pastor at a Bronx church, Fr. Jablonski, affectionately known as Jabo, had a small garden where he grew tomatoes. He noticed they were being trampled on and called the local precinct and asked to speak with the officer in charge. This was Austin who told the good father he was putting his best people, Cardinal Hayes graduates, on the case. In short order the culprits (neighborhood kids) were "apprehended", and the case was solved. May you Rest in Peace, Austin,
Tom Walsh
