Ava Goodwin Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Twiford Funeral Homes - Elizabeth City on Mar. 2, 2025.
Ava Kirby Goodwin, age 76, of Winfall, NC died expectantly on Friday, February 28, 2025. Born in Edenton, NC on December 22, 1948 to the late Ray Kirby and Joann Trueblood Kirby, she was the widow of Leroy Jack Goodwin. Ava served as the superintendent at the Elizabeth City Water Plant where her commitment to her work was admired by colleagues and community members alike. In her personal life, Ava was a true artist at heart. Her passion for creating beauty out of everyday materials shone through in her love for making wreaths, paintings, and engaging in various crafts. Her creations brought joy to those who were fortunate enough to witness them. Ava's passion for classical music was unparalleled. She found solace and inspiration in the harmonies and melodies that filled her home and heart. Her kitchen was often filled with comforting aromas of home-cooked meals, a testament to her love of cooking and her generous spirit. Ava took great pleasure in feeding her family and friends, ensuring everyone felt welcome and cared for around her table. Her appreciation for the arts extended beyond personal enjoyment, as she shared this love with friends and family, enriching their lives with the same beauty she cherished.
Ava is survived by her son, Jason Smith and his wife, Kristin, of Elizabeth City; her brother, Clay Kirby (Cindy); her grandchildren, Alexis Smith (Blake) and Austin Bray Smith (Gabrielle); extended grandchildren, Dustin Williams, Consuela Williams, and Adrienne Gladden; her great grandchildren, Adalyn, Landon, Waylon, AJ, Raya, Bowen and expected any day, Isabelle; her niece, Joanna Kirby; and her nephew, Tommy Kirby. Among those who cherished her most is her closest friend, Edie Cartwright. Though connected by marriage, their bond ran deeper, entwined with affection and mutual respect. She was preceded in death by her parents and spouse.
Ava will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing her.
A gathering will be held at 5:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, March 7, 2025, at Twiford Memorial Chapel.
