Avis Marie Ricks, known as Marie to her friends and family, age 85, of McAlester, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday, December 21, 2025, in McAlester, Oklahoma, surrounded by her loving family.
Cremation arrangements are entrusted to Bishop Funeral Service and Crematory. In accordance with Marie's wishes, no services will be held. An inurnment will take place at Bache Red Oak Cemetery.
Marie was born on March 7, 1940, in Durant, Oklahoma, to Eston and Avis (Smith) Buchanan. She graduated from Durant High School and later married the love of her life, J.R. Ricks, on June 14, 1957, in Durant. Together they shared one son, Tommy Ricks. The family moved to McAlester in the mid-1960s, where Marie would spend the remainder of her life.
Marie worked as a warehouse manager for Al Horton at Dixie Liquor before later joining her son, Tommy, at Alamo Liquor Store in McAlester. She was known for her strong work ethic and dedication to her family.
In her free time, Marie enjoyed horse races, shopping, and taking trips to the casino with her friends. She cherished time spent with family and friends and will be remembered for her warmth, independence, and love of life.
Marie is survived by her daughter-in-law, Becky (Lester) Ricks; granddaughter, Jennifer Buck and husband, K.C.; grandson, Jason Ricks; great-grandson, Carter Dale Buck, all of McAlester; sister, Joyce Cleveland of Durant; brother-in-law, Jim Ricks; sister-in-law, Patsy Ross and husband, Steve; special niece, Clara Baker of Durant; along with numerous other nieces and nephews. She is also survived by special friends Lona Horton, Stacy Horton, Jimmy Camp, and many other friends and family members.
Marie was preceded in death by her husband, J.R. Ricks; her son, Tommy Ricks; and her parents, Eston and Avis (Smith) Buchanan; along with her brothers and sisters.
