Avis Naomi West, beloved daughter of Wheeler County and devoted matriarch, passed away peacefully on January 8, 2026, in Vidalia, Georgia, at the age of 86. Born on October 13, 1939, Avis was a beacon of warmth and kindness in the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing her.
As a cherished member of the Wheeler County Schools community, Avis dedicated many years of her life as part of the lunchroom staff. Her unwavering commitment to serving others left a lasting impression through the halls of the school and beyond.
Avis is survived by her loving children, Virginia W. Horton (Raford) of McRae and Dennis Wayne West of Glenwood, who carry forward her legacy of love and compassion. She took great pride in her grandchildren, Catherine Burnsed (Matthew), Michael Horton, Miranda Horton (Kimber), and Kenneth Wayne West, who brought immeasurable joy into her life. The laughter and smiles of her great-grandchildren, Alexandra Burnsed, Shaun Burnsed, and Dalton Horton, painted her days with happiness. With the arrival of her great-great-grandchild, Braxton Horton, her family's legacy continues to blossom.
Avis was preceded in death by her husband, Delmas West, and her sons, Delvis Wayne West and David West, who have now welcomed her into eternity. Their bonds, forged in love, leave an indelible mark on the hearts of those they have left behind.
The family welcomes friends and loved ones for a visitation on January 10, 2026, from 12:00 PM to 1:00 PM, followed by a graveside service at 1:00 PM at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, Hwy 19, Glenwood, Georgia.
As we reflect on the beautiful life of Avis Naomi West, we remember her not only for the roles she played but for the love she shared so freely. A life well-lived, she will forever remain in the hearts of those who had the fortune to know her.
