Ayen Lual passed away on January 24th, 2025, at the age of 20 in Des Moines, Iowa, at Mercy Hospital after battling cancer for nearly three years.
Ayen was born on April 26, 2004, in Des Moines, Iowa, and was the daughter of Triaza Nyiker and Isaac Lual. Ayen was raised in Des Moines alongside her siblings, Dau, Nyandeng, Julliana, and Akot Lual. She attended Willard Elementary, Hiatt Middle School, and graduated from East High School. Ayen then continued her education at Iowa State University, where she majored in Nursing.
Ayen was a shining light in the lives of everyone who knew her. Her positive spirit could brighten even the darkest days. She loved being around her family and enjoyed the little things in life. She was a sweetheart who always saw the best in people. Her heart was bigger than life itself, and she would do anything to help those in need. Despite the challenges she faced, Ayen continued to smile, laugh, and remain courageous through it all. Her journey was one of immense struggle but also of deep love and determination. Her family never left her side, and Ayen made sure to always show her appreciation. Her mother, Triaza, was her rock, her support, and her source of comfort throughout her battle. Ayen drew strength from her family and, in return, gave back everything she had. She never lost her sense of humor or kindness. Ayen never failed to lend a helping hand or an ear to listen, and her warmth touched the lives of those who had the privilege of knowing her. Ayen had an ability to make those around her feel seen, loved, and valued, and her empathy knew no bounds.
Ayen is survived by her mother, siblings, and many others who loved her deeply. She is preceded in death by her father, Isaac; her niece, Ayak; her older siblings, Nyangeth, Riak, and William; and her cousin, Dok.
Ayen will be truly missed, and her loving spirit will continue to live on through us. She will be remembered not only for her courage and strength but also for the love, kindness, and joy she brought into this world. Her memory will continue to inspire all who knew her to live with compassion, gratitude, and a love for life.
