Barbara Browder Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Nov. 9, 2025.
El Paso - Dr. Barbara Ann "BAB" Browder passed away peacefully on November 5, 2025, in El Paso, Texas, at the age of 81.

Her early education began at Douglass School in El Paso, a cornerstone of Black excellence during segregation. Her journey from those halls to district leadership stands as a testament to her determination and conviction. She went on to graduate from Bowie High School and completed her bachelor's and master's degrees at Texas Western College (now UTEP - University of Texas at El Paso), further showcasing her commitment to education and excellence.

A lifelong educator and dedicated leader who inspired many, for more than fifty years, she dedicated her life to nurturing minds and strengthening schools across the El Paso and Gadsden Independent School Districts. In El Paso ISD, she served as a teacher, assistant principal, principal, and director. She was the inaugural principal for Omar Nelson Bradley Elementary School, where her leadership and compassion helped shape the school's foundation and spirit.

Later, in Gadsden ISD, Barbara turned her focus to guiding and supporting those who served throughout the district. As Associate Superintendent, she oversaw all areas of Human Resources-recruiting, developing, and mentoring educators, administrators, and staff who would carry forward her legacy of excellence. Her insight and encouragement helped countless professionals find confidence and purpose in their work. During this time, she also earned her Ph.D. from New Mexico State University-a reflection of her fortitude and lifelong love of learning.

Dr. Browder was a proud member and past chapter president of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and was twice honored as PREPS "Mother of the Year." Her passion for music led her to serve as Music Director at Second Baptist Church, where she fostered a vibrant community of church musicians. She also found joy in travel, theater, and cheering on her beloved Dallas Cowboys.

She is survived by nephew Travis W. Young; nieces Genevieve E. Young and Mary M. White; great-nieces Sandra Haynes, Lisa Ann Walker (Shawn), Veronica Graham; and great-great-nieces and nephews Brittani Graham, Camron Walker, and Jackson Graham, along with extended family and friends.

To Dr. Browder´s Family,

I wanted to offer my heartfelt condolences as you remember and celebrate her life. I knew Dr. Browder during my later years as a special education teacher, and what stays with me most is her kindness. She had a way of seeing people for who they were and who they could become. She offered encouragement that was gentle, but it stayed with you, guiding the way forward.

She gave me confidence at a time when I needed it most. Her belief in my work and in my voice helped shape the path I eventually walked. That kind of support is not small. It is something a person carries for a lifetime.

I hope you are surrounded by comfort, by stories told softly, and by the deep knowing that her leadership and compassion made a lasting difference. She touched more lives than she may have ever realized. I am just one of many grateful hearts holding her memory close.

Wishing your family peace, strength, and moments of gentle grace in the days ahead.

With warmth,
Patricia Johnson-Vierra

I had the honor of meeting Dr. Browder-an amazing, unique, friendly, outgoing and respectful woman. We worked together at Gadsden, where she was my supervisor at the time. I truly enjoyed working with her and appreciate her incredible knowledge and leadership. Thank you, Dr. Browder, for all your hard work and dedication to each and everyone one of us. We deeply appreciate all the great times and positive energy you brought to Gadsden!
