Barbara Cox Obituary

YOUNGSTOWN - Barbara L. Cox, 78, passed away on Sunday June 22, 2025, surrounded by her loved ones.

She was born on December 26, 1946, in Ambridge, Pennsylvania, to the late William and Francis (Hockenberry) Hankey.

Barbara graduated from Rayen High School and continued her education at Youngstown State University, earning some college credit. For nearly 20 years, Barbara dedicated her career to serving as a cook at St. Elizabeth Hospital. She had a profound love for traveling and fun, whether it was to the lakes, oceans, casinos, or an amusement park. Notably, she was an enormous fan of Elvis, and his music filled her life with rhythm and happiness. Dancing was another passion, with Barbara particularly enjoying the jitterbug and the mashed potato, movements that showcased her vibrant personality.

Barbara’s legacy continues through her four adoring children: daughters Tammy (Christopher) Emerick and Shannon (Darin) Benyak, and sons Robert (Sophie) Cox and Jerry (Melanie) Cox. She was a wonderful sister to Kathy Turnbull and Robert (Barb) Hankey,

Barbara also deeply adored her grandchildren, Ryan Cox, Ella Emerick, Shane (Amanda) Staser, Sean Staser, Scott Staser, Mason Cox, Gavin Cox, Madalyn Cox, Alaina (Tyler) Ammann, and Mariella Benyak. Her bond with them was uniquely special, filled with laughter, love, and unforgettable moments. She was an amazing woman who cared endlessly about everyone in her life, her top priority always being the happiness of her children and grandchildren.

She now joins her beloved parents, William Hankey and Francis (Hockenberry) Hankey, along with her siblings Nancy Swingle, Geneva Peck, Thomas Hankey, and William Hankey Jr., who awaited her in eternal rest.
