Presque Isle - Barbara Lee McKay Currier passed away unexpectantly on December 12th, 2024, in her beloved hometown of
Presque Isle, Maine. Born on March 26, 1943, to Bob and Beatrice McKay, Barbara was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend who lived a life full of passion, service, and joy. Barbara graduated from Presque Isle High School in 1961 and went on to earn both her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees in Education from the University of Maine at Orono. While in High School and College, Barbara worked as a Clerk of Course traveling throughout Maine and New Brunswick's harness racing circuit. Barbara McKay and Tim Currier were married in August of 1973 and honeymooned in Nova Scotia with their poodle and Irish Setter. Barbara and Tim shared 51 years of devoted memories, family adventures and life.
Her unwavering commitment to education led her to a remarkable 30-year career with the Limestone School Department. Barbara worked tirelessly as a classroom teacher, reading recovery specialist, assistant principal, and, finally, principal of Limestone Community School. Her work shaped the lives of countless students and colleagues, earning her the respect and admiration of her community.
Outside of her professional life, Barbara was a woman of many talents and interests. For over 20 years, she dedicated herself to riding and teaching horseback lessons to students at Cain Brook Glenn. Her love for horses was only rivaled by her passion for toy poodles, which she bred and showcased at competitions across the country, earning numerous accolades. Whether she was in the saddle or ringside of a dog show Barbara brought energy, enthusiasm, and a unique flair to all her endeavors.
Barbara split her time between Maine and Florida, cherishing every moment spent with her family. Spring and summers were spent in Presque Isle, enjoying quality time with her son, Dale Currier, and her two grandsons, Emmett (12) and Knox (10). Barbara enjoyed spending time at the family camp at Portage Lake where she was able to enjoy listening to the loons and watching the beautiful sunrises and sunsets the lake had to offer. As the seasons changed, she migrated south to Englewood, Florida, where she relished the warm winters with her daughter Jenn Ayer, son-in-law Aaron Ayer and her eldest grandson, Simon (18). Barbara's commitment to family was a cornerstone of her life, and she thrived on creating memories with her loved ones, whether at home or on her many travels.
Barbara also had a knack for building lasting relationships. Her adventures took her across the country and beyond, often in the company of dear friends and family. Whether exploring new places or returning to familiar favorites, Barbara approached every trip with a curiosity and a zest for life.
Barbara leaves behind her devoted husband, Tim Currier, her children Dale Currier (Caribou, Maine, and Jenn Ayer (Englewood Florida), her cherished grandsons Emmett, Knox, and Simon and countless friends and former colleagues who will forever remember her warm smile, generous heart and indomitable spirit.
Barbara's life was a testament to love, dedication, and the pursuit of joy in all its forms. She will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who knew her. In lieu of flowers, please take a moment to appreciate the beauty of a Maine summer day, take in the splendor of the Gulf of Mexico, hug a teacher, or spend time with a beloved animal companion-gestures that would have brought a smile to her face.
Per Barbara's wishes, there will be no services. Arrangements are in care of Duncan-Graves Funeral Home, 30 Church St.,
Presque Isle, ME 04769. Memories and condolences may be shared with the family at: www.duncan-graves.com
