Barbara Farrell Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Sinatra Memorial Home, Inc. on Feb. 2, 2026.
Dr. Barbara Farrell devoted her life to education, mentorship, and service to others. For more than 46 years, she inspired generations of students as an Accounting Professor at Pace University, guiding young professionals not only in the principles of accounting but in the values of integrity, confidence, and compassion. Alongside her distinguished academic career, she built an accomplished and respected profession as a Certified Public Accountant, earning the admiration of colleagues and students alike.

Barbara's influence went far beyond the classroom. She mentored hundreds of students over the years, many of whom credit her with shaping their careers and their character. She was a teacher in every sense of the word - offering wisdom, encouragement, and kindness in all aspects of life. Her lessons were not only about numbers and balance sheets, but about resilience, generosity, and believing in oneself.

If one were to look up the word friend in the dictionary, Barbara's picture would surely be there. She loved deeply and gave freely of herself to all who were fortunate enough to know her. Being surrounded by friends - whom she often considered family - brought her immense joy. Her warmth, compassion, and genuine interest in others drew people to her instantly, and her radiant smile could light up any room she entered.

Above all else, Barbara was a devoted and loving mother. Her son, Brandon, was the greatest joy of her life and the light of her heart. They shared a special bond filled with watching football games, good food, cherished friends, and, most of all, endless laughter. The time they spent together was precious to her, and those moments of joy and connection meant the world to her.

Barbara was also extraordinarily generous to those in need. She was a passionate supporter of animal rescue organizations and devoted time and resources to volunteer groups that cared for dogs and other animals. Her kindness extended quietly and consistently, often without recognition, simply because helping others made her happy.

In recent years, Barbara faced cancer with remarkable courage and unwavering optimism. True to her spirit, she never allowed the illness to define her. She remained positive, looking forward and living life fully, believing she would overcome every challenge. She was a warrior who fought with grace and strength until the end, inspiring all who witnessed her resilience. Even in her most difficult moments, she continued to teach those around her through her example of hope, dignity, and perseverance.

Barbara is survived by her beloved son, Brandon Downing, of whom she was endlessly proud; her brothers, Ray and Kevin Farrell; her sister, Carolanne; and her mother, Ruth Farrell. Her family was the center of her heart, and her love for them was boundless.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Barbara's memory to Pets Alive, the SPCA of Westchester, or charity of your choice. Giving to others was one of her greatest joys, and supporting causes that care for animals and people alike reflects the generosity and kindness that defined her life.

Dr. Barbara Farrell leaves behind a legacy of education, friendship, compassion, and strength. She touched countless lives and will be remembered not only as an exceptional educator and professional, but as a truly beautiful human being devoted mother, loyal friend and constant source of warmth -whose spirit will continue to inspire all who knew her.

I am a former student of Dr. Barbara Farrell, though she always encouraged us to call her "Barbara" after graduation. Somehow, I could never quite do it - she would always be Dr. Farrell to me, out of deep respect and gratitude.

Dr. Farrell had a profound impact on my life. She challenged me, believed in me, and helped shape the way I think and lead today. I feel incredibly fortunate that we stayed in touch after graduation and that I was able to tell her how much she meant to me.

She will be deeply missed, and her influence will live on in the many students whose lives she changed - mine especially.
