Our beloved mother and grandmother, Barbara Jean "BJ" Hale, passed away after a long illness on June 20, 2025. She was born in 1937 to Andrew T. Wade and Mary (Southerland) Carpenter in Kinston, NC.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Brown of Elizabethtown, KY; sister, Kim Denton of Colorado Springs, CO; brother, Jim (Dee) Carpenter of Georgetown, KY; sister in-law, Betsy Wade of Colorado Springs, CO; grandchildren, Jacqueline Theintz of New South Wales, Australia, Ben Theintz of Louisville, KY, Genevieve Daugherty of Keizer, OR, and Madeleine Daugherty of Epping, NH; and one great-grandchild, Violet.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sons, Billy "Paul" Daugherty, Bobby Wade Daugherty, Christian Miller Daugherty; brothers, Lawrence Wade and Jon Carpenter; and her beloved cat, Blue Kitty.
BJ spent her early years on a tobacco farm in North Carolina before moving to Kentucky and growing up in Elizabethtown and Hodgenville; she graduated from EHS. She later moved to Manitou Springs, CO where she became owner of an antique store called "Another Chance". She began cooking for a few different places in Colorado Springs, and worked as a landscaper for Broadmoor Hotel. After moving to Ellettsville, she began caregiving in Bloomington and volunteering at Mother Hubbard's Cupboard. She was an excellent artist, a skilled piano player, a passionate landscaper, and dedicated quilter. She loved flowers, cooking, and music, especially Bob Dylan.
In keeping with BJ's wishes, cremation is planned with no services to be held. Allen Funeral Home and crematory were entrusted to the care of these arrangements.

My dearest Aunt Barbara. I'm just seeing this now. We had few interactions yet your impression was strong and lasting. I hope you are at peace. You were loved.

BJ-You were always kind to me. Never once were you negative. Your personality was big and beautiful. I walked away from our interactions with more energy and feelings of joy. I know your spirit is amongst us, so I say to you thanks for providing my nieces and the world a true example of strength, individuality and genuine tenderness.
