Barbara Marie Hartgrove, a beloved matriarch, departed this life on October 15, 2025, at the age of 83. Born on May 18, 1942, in New Castle, Indiana, Barbara was the cherished daughter of the late Mary A. and John F. Meeks Sr.
Barbara’s passions were as vibrant as her personality. An avid reader, she found immense joy in the pages of books. She also enjoyed watching her favorite soap operas, cooking, and hosting gatherings that brought family and friends together, creating cherished memories that will last a lifetime.
Above all, Barbara's greatest joy came from spending time with her family. She fostered a sense of togetherness that created strong bonds among her loved ones. Barbara's legacy will live on in the hearts of those who were fortunate enough to share in her life.
She is survived by her devoted husband and high school sweetheart of 67 years, Stephen R. Hartgrove; and her loving children, John Hartgrove (Gloria), Stephanie Hancock (Joe), and Joe Hartgrove. Barbara's love further extended to her cherished grandchildren, Matthew Hartgrove (Rachel), Darren Hartgrove (Kelsey), Jennifer Hancock, and Mitch Hancock; and her adored great-grandson, Chase Hartgrove.
Barbara was also the proud sister of John F. Meeks Jr. (Ginny), Alice Meeks, Mary Jo Coyner (Randall), and Cheryl Meeks. She cherished her siblings, forging bonds that lasted a lifetime. Additionally, she leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Barbara was preceded in death by her son, James E. Hartgrove; and her brother-in-law, Jerry Hartgrove.
Family and friends are invited to gather at Singleton Funeral & Cremation Services, PA, Glen Burnie, on Tuesday, October 21st, from 11 AM – 1 PM. A memorial service will immediately follow at 1 PM in the funeral home chapel. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Children’s National Hospital by visiting www.childrensnational.org
