Barbara Lynnwood Hendrix

October 5, 1929 – February 1, 2026

Barbara Lynnwood (Kennett) Hendrix died peacefully on February 1, 2026, at Summit Hills in Spartanburg, where she had made her home. She was 96.

Known affectionately as "Mud" to her family, Mrs. Hendrix was born in Spartanburg on October 5, 1929, to the late James Oscar Kennett and Sally Hames Kennett. She was married for 62 years to Richard Wayne Hendrix, who preceded her in death nine years ago.

After graduating from Spartanburg High School, Mrs. Hendrix attended Cecil Business College and built a pioneering career at Allstate Insurance Company. Through years of dedicated work, she rose to own her own Allstate agency—believed to be the first woman in South Carolina to achieve this distinction.

A woman of quiet grace and genuine charm, Mrs. Hendrix possessed an easy, friendly manner that drew people to her. She delighted in gardens and flowers, antiques and estate sales. She cherished time at Litchfield Beach and in the Cashiers-Highlands area of Western North Carolina. A member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, she organized several high school reunions, keeping her classmates connected across the decades. Above all, she was devoted to her family.

Mrs. Hendrix is survived by her sons, Richard Wayne Hendrix II of Davidson, North Carolina, and Mark Norwood Hendrix (Judy) of Columbia, South Carolina; grandchildren Ashley Lindsay Smith, John Charles Lindsay II, Richard Wayne Hendrix III, Elizabeth Hendrix, and Katherine Hendrix; great-grandchildren Crosland Lamb, Barrett Lamb, Grant Smith, Haley Lindsay, and Jackson Lindsay; nephew Charles Hendrix; niece Margaret Valinski; and numerous other nieces, nephews, and cousins.

She was predeceased by her husband Richard, her beloved daughter Beverly Hendrix Lindsay, her brother Robert Eugene Kennett, and her sisters Mary Taylor, Jan McCarthy, and Wilma Miller.

A graveside service will be held at Greenlawn Memorial Gardens in Spartanburg on Friday, February 6, at 2:00 p.m.

The family extends heartfelt thanks to the staff at Summit Hills for their excellent care and attention during Mrs. Hendrix's residence there.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Agape Hospice, 706 East Main Street, Spartanburg, SC 29302.
