Barbara Higgins Obituary

Barbara Ann Philbeck Higgins died January 9, 2026 at her home in Forest City. She was surrounded by her family and friends. She was the daughter of the late Hammond and Hazel Philbeck. Her Husband was the late Harlen Higgins. Her sister was the late Lucille Fincannon. She is survived by her son John Higgins and wife Stephanie. Her grandson John Cole Higgins and wife Maddie. She is also survived by numerous loving nieces and nephews. Mrs. Higgins was born in Rutherford County, lived in the Washburn and Concord Communities before moving to Spindale. Shortly after moving to Spindale they started attending Spindale United Methodist Church. This would become her church home for the rest of her life. She attended almost every Sunday service even when she was unable to walk and had to rely on a wheelchair. She was very active in the UM Women for many years, holding various positions in both the local church and at the district level. She also was a lay delegate at the General Conference at Lake Junaluska. She attended and graduated from RS Central High School. After graduation she attended Medical Record Transcription school. Later she received her Associates of Science degree from ICC and then graduated from Western Carolina University with a BS in Medical Record Administration. While in High School she volunteered as a candy striper at Rutherford Hospital. It was with Rutherford Hospital that she began a long career in the Medical Records department. She served as director of that department for many years. Her career was cut short by a Multiple Sclerosis diagnosis in 1990. In retirement she and her husband of 56 years enjoyed many bus trips all over the United States. When her grandson, Cole, was old enough he was included on many of these trips. Due to declining health over the past 5 years, she was cared for by an army of truly loving and compassionate individuals who attended to her daily needs while Mrs. Higgins lived at home until her death. These include her caregiver and friend Kathy Ferguson and her niece Cathy Parnell. The family is also in the debt and gratitude of the many caregivers, nurses, CNAs, and emergency responders who were involved in her care. A celebration of life service will be held Saturday, January 17, at 2 p.m. at Spindale United Methodist Church. The family will receive friends starting at 1 p.m. in the church fellowship hall. Memorials may be made to Spindale United Methodist Church. Crowe's Mortuary is in charge of arrangements.

John, Stephanie, Chris and Cathy, We are so sorry to hear of Barbara's passing. She was without a doubt the kindest, sweetest person. Her quiet voice was always reassuring and brought forth calm to any situation. She was the epitome of a southern lady. She will truly be missed.
