Barbara Knierim Obituary

Barbara Catherine Knierim, age 81, passed away peacefully on December 13, 2025, at her home of fifty two years in Downers Grove, Illinois. She was born on July 1, 1944, in Chicago, Illinois, the daughter of James and Mary.

Above all else, Barb was devoted to her children and family. Her life was a lived expression of her Christian faith, shown through love, service and an open heart. She welcomed others fully, into her home and into her life, believing faith was meant to be shared.

Barb was a devoted member of St. Scholastica Parish for more than five decades. She taught middle school for over twenty years, guiding generations of students with steadiness and a genuine love for their growing minds. She prayed daily for others and carried the concerns of friends, family and strangers with a quiet and constant care.

She was fiercely loyal and loving, accompanied by an equally fierce independence. Barb cared for her home and yard all through her life. She welcomed others into that home with gratitude and joy. She hosted Christmas Eve, birthdays, graduations, and countless everyday gatherings under her roof because she believed her home was meant to be shared. She loved books and reading, and she gave away as many books as she kept. Barb baked amazing banana bread and created handmade cards, all intended to express care for others in her life.

Barb received her bachelor's degree from Benedictine University in 2000. She volunteered throughout her community over many years and served her parish in a multitude of ways. What she offered most consistently, though, was her presence. She loved her children, grandchildren, siblings, nieces, nephews, students, neighbors and friends. If she knew you, she held you in her heart.

She is survived by her children Sean (Nina), Kelly, and Kyle (Shanna). She was the beloved grandmother of Aidan, Maria, Chase, and Kelly Rose. She is also survived by her siblings Mary, Jean, Maureen, and Mike, and by her former husband, Phillip Knierim. She was preceded in death by her parents and by her brother James.

Services will be held on Saturday, December 27 at St. Scholastica Parish in Woodridge, Illinois. Visitation will begin at 11:00am and the Funeral Mass will begin at noon. A reception will follow.

Her ashes will be buried at Saint Mary Cemetery in Mokena, Illinois, during a family service in 2026.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the MD Anderson Cancer Center, or to the Morton Arboretum, a place she loved.

Barb lived with faith, loyalty, and a deep love for the people who filled her life. She will be missed, remembered and carried forward by all who knew her.
