Barbara Lans Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Reuland & Turnbough Funeral Directors - Lake Forest on Feb. 14, 2026.
Barbara J. Lans, a beacon of intelligence and loving kindness, passed away on February 9, 2026, just one day after celebrating her 85th birthday. Born on February 8, 1941, in Chicago, IL, Barbara's life journey came to a peaceful close in Lake Forest, IL, surrounded by the love of her family and the many lives she touched.

Barbara's legacy is one of unwavering dedication to her family and her profession. She was predeceased by her beloved husband, Dr. Hyman S. Lans, with whom she shared a lifetime of memories. Her nurturing spirit lives on through her children, William (Elizabeth) Liedholm, Christie (Alan) Peterson, Eric (Stephanie) Liedholm, Kenneth Lans, and Deborah Lans. Barbara was a loving Nana to Jordan, Brittany, Trenton, Amy, Karen, Linda, Zachary, Ben, Michael, and a doting great-grandmother to Bradley, Jack, Dylan, Hugo, Gabriel, and Elliana, as well as the anticipated "Little Bean." She also leaves behind her cherished pet & companion, Oliver.

A lifelong learner and educator, Barbara's academic achievements were remarkable. After becoming a Registered Professional Nurse certified in Emergency Department Nursing by the Cook County Graduate School of Medicine, she went on to earn a Bachelor of Science in Health Studies from Barat College. Her thirst for knowledge did not stop there; she obtained a Master of Arts from Northeastern Illinois University and further distinguished herself as a National Certified Counselor and an Illinois Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor.

Barbara's professional life was as vibrant and impactful as her academic pursuits. She provided compassionate care and expert guidance at the Highland Park Hospital Emergency Department, where her analytical mind and calm demeanor were invaluable during critical moments. Her career path also led her to Lake County Mental Health, where she made significant contributions to community well-being, with a particular interest in helping women. In her private practice, Barbara combined her deep understanding of human behavior with a heart full of empathy, offering solace and solutions to those in need.

Beyond her professional and academic accomplishments, Barbara was an aficionado of orchids, finding joy in the delicate beauty and complexity of these flowers. Her love for orchids mirrored her own nature-both analytical and loving, with an appreciation for the intricate patterns of life.

Barbara's intelligence was apparent to all who knew her, yet it was her loving nature that truly defined her character. She approached every challenge with a thoughtful mind and a compassionate heart, leaving an indelible mark on her family, friends, and the countless individuals she guided throughout her career.

As we say farewell to Barbara J. Lans, we celebrate a life well-lived-a life full of love, learning, and the quiet grace of a woman who was the epitome of strength and tenderness. Her memory will be treasured, her presence sorely missed, and her legacy forever woven into the fabric of the lives she touched. Barbara's story is one of a life not just lived, but lived with purpose and unending love.

Interment will be private.
