Barbara Mackey Obituary

Barbara Jean Mackey 1934-2023 Barbara Jean Mackey passed into the arms of Jesus on Wednesday, January 4, 2023. Barbara Mackey was born on December 4, 1934, in Liberty, Oklahoma, to the parents of Jack and Bertie Walton. She married Beryl Mackey in Durant, Oklahoma, on December 23, 1955. Barbara and Beryl began their teaching career at Liberty, Oklahoma, in a one-room schoolhouse. They moved to Sherman in 1956, where she taught first grade, second grade, and special education. She developed many friendships at Crockett, Jefferson, Wakefield, and Perrin Elementary Schools. She loved her students and was always excited to receive any communication with them during retirement. Barbara retired from Sherman ISD on June 1, 1987. Summertime was a busy time, finding Barbara in the garden picking and canning the vegetables from the garden that Beryl grew. She loved the garden and her flowerbeds. Barbara and Beryl were charter members of the Dewey Avenue Church of Christ, which is now Parkview Church of Christ. Barbara's favorite duties with the church were teaching Sunday School, Vacation Bible School, Bible Quiz, and Ladies' Bible Class. She spent countless hours studying God's Word and preparing for classes leading to spreading the Gospel through many generations. Barbara is survived by her husband of 67 years, Beryl F. Mackey of Sherman, TX; daughter Laurie Davenport and husband, David of Collinsville, TX; son Eric Mackey and wife, Nancy of Allen, TX; sister Nell Williams of Denison, TX; grandchildren, Matthew Davenport and wife, Raea of Collinsville, TX; Adam Davenport and wife, Hollie of Houston, TX; Joel Davenport and wife, Kristin of Poccasett, OK; Danielle Smith and husband, Chris of Columbus, NC; Chase Mackey of Allen, TX; Summer Scolaro and husband, Drew of Richardson, TX; and twelve great-grandchildren. Those who have preceded her in death are parents Jack and Bertie Walton; sister Lillian McAlister and husband, Troy; sister Jola Russell and husband, Paul; sister Janice Parker and her husband, David; and brother-in-law Claud Williams. Visitation will be at Waldo Funeral Home in Sherman, Texas, on Friday, January 6, from 5:30 PM to 6:30 PM.
