Barbara Messer Obituary
Born June 3, 1934, in Anderson, SC, she was the daughter of the late Freeman and Bessie Burdette. Barbara loved God and her family.
She had a love of flowers and watching birds, especially hummingbirds. She was also an avid treasure hunter, searching for unique treasures at local yard sales on Saturday mornings. Her home reflected her creativity, often filled with treasures found on her Saturday morning yard sale adventures. She was a member of Salem Baptist Church. Above all, Barbara loved her family and her greatest joy was spending time with them.
She is survived by her children, Linda Vickery (Leonard), James Grogan, Jackie Chasteen (Kenneth), and Bruce Grogan (Kathy); 12 grandchildren; and brother, Johnny Burdette. She was preceded in death by her parents, Freeman and Bessie Burdette; children, Terry and Jerry Grogan, Judy Chasteen and Teresa Sanders; brothers, Rayford and Manuel Burdette; sisters, Mary Myers and Clara Seawright.
The funeral service will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at 10:00 am in the Chapel of The McDougald Funeral Home with Rev. Sam Duncan officiating. Burial will follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
Flowers are optional or memorial contributions may be made to Calvary Home for Children, 110 Calvary Home Circle, Anderson, SC 29621.
The family will be at the home of her daughter Linda Vickery.
