Meredosia - Barbara May (Berry) Newman, 93, of Meredosia, IL, went to be with the Lord on September 7, 2025.
She was born on May 1, 1932, in Wigan, England, the daughter of John Robinson and Bertha Irene Berry. She married Larry "Joe" Newman on July 17, 1954, and he preceded her in death on August 7, 2021.
She is survived by her children, Anthony (Liz) Newman, Randy (Tammy) Newman, Lisa Newman Ladely, and companion, Stan Buhlig, all of Meredosia. She is also survived by a brother, Trevor (Sandra) Berry of Wigan, England; nieces, JoAnn Ensor, Andrea Kinsella, and Adrian Berry, all of Wigan, England; five grandchildren, Nicole Newman (Robert Van Meter) of Hannibal, MO, Richard A. Newman Jr. of Jacksonville, FL, Jesse Joe Meyers (companion Dereka Johnson) of Meredosia, Ethan D. (Dawn) Myers of Meredosia, and Kristi (Tim) Newman Smith of Jacksonville; eighteen great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Richard Newman Sr.; grandson, Alex Newman; sister-in-law, Rosemary Stephenson; special nephew, Tom Newman; and son-in-law, Steven B. Ladely.
Barb was a die-hard St. Louis Cardinals Baseball and Illini Basketball fan. She loved to knit; having knitted for Toys for Tots, the homeless, and local school children, and whoever stopped by her house usually left with something she knitted. Barb served on the Meredosia Rescue Squad for many years. In her younger years, she belonged to a bicycling club in Wigan. She worked at Heinz Ketchup Co, Burrus Seed Co, and other small companies over the years. She was quite the conversationalist and had an opinion on everything you wanted to know. She was an avid golfer in her earlier years and had a hole-in-one in her 80's. She will be missed by many.
Cremation rites have been administered. A memorial service will be held 11a.m. Friday, September 19, 2025, at the Buchanan & Cody Funeral Home in Jacksonville, with a potluck to follow at the American Legion in Meredosia.
