Barbara Sue Ray, age 83, of Rome, GA passed away peacefully on Monday afternoon, February 2, 2026, at a local hospital surrounded by her family. Barbara was born on February 28, 1942, in Tuscaloosa, AL. Barbara carved out a life that was a testament to kindness, warmth and love for her family.
A skilled seamstress, Barbara dedicated her career to help create garments and nurturing the creativity of those around her. Her handiwork was not merely a job but an extension of her affection for family, friends and community. She worked many years at Rome Cleaners. Barbara was known for her exceptional ability to make others feel at ease, often the person whom everyone sought for comfort and support. Her great sense of humor created an atmosphere where joy was abundant and laughter echoed.
Barbara was a devoted mother to her children, Angela Fuller, Denise Thomas, Tracey Harless and Johnny Howell. Her love for them was profound and unwavering, establishing a foundation of family that will continue to thrive in her absence. Along with her children, Barbara is remembered fondly by her grand children that she raised, CJ Ray, Trey Grissom, Layne Fuller; 11 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, who were the light of her life; and a special son-in-law, Jason Fuller. In addition to her immediate family, Barbara leaves behind siblings: Deborah Quattelbaum, Sheila Parker, Brenda Dunn and Mike Parker, who will carry forward her legacy of love and compassion.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Carl Dunn, Sr. and Inez Dunn Parker; her husband, James Ray; her son, Wayne Howell; a brother, Carl Dunn Jr and a sister, Judy Tinker. Each of these losses shaped her life and instilled in her a deep sense of family, which she nurtured throughout her years.
The family will receive friends for a visitation to honor and celebrate the life of Mrs. Barbara on Wednesday afternoon, February 11, 2026 starting at 3:00 PM until 5:00 PM at Salmon Funeral Home & Crematory.
Her radiant spirit, kind heart, and unwavering sense of humor will be profoundly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her. Barbara Sue Ray's legacy lives on in the hearts of her family, reminding us of the importance of love, laughter, and the bonds we share.
