Evelyn Elizabeth Ray, born on March 13, 1935, in
Brooklyn, New York, passed away peacefully on January 31, 2026, in
Jacksonville, North Carolina, at the age of 90.
Evelyn was a devoted Navy wife, supporting her husband, Nathan Emmett Ray, throughout his service. Together, they retired to the warmth and sunshine of Florida, where they enjoyed their later years. Together, they shared a life filled with love and companionship, balancing her indoor inclinations with his love for the outdoors. She was a loving mother to her children and a cherished grandmother, always putting her family first and nurturing them with unwavering support and affection.
Evelyn's professional journey was as diverse as it was fulfilling. She began her career as an elementary teacher, imparting knowledge and kindness to young minds. Later, she ventured into real estate, where her keen eye and dedication served her well. Her compassionate nature eventually led her to nursing, where she cared for others with the same devotion she showed her family.
Music was a lifelong passion for Evelyn. She was a talented musician, playing the piano, organ, accordion, and cello with grace and joy. Her home was often filled with melodies that brought comfort and happiness to those around her. Evelyn also had a deep love for animals, especially dogs, and she shared her life with many loyal canine companions over the years.
A voracious reader, Evelyn had an insatiable appetite for books, devouring everything from classic literature to contemporary novels. Her love for reading was a testament to her curious mind and her desire to explore the world through words.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter, Debra Murnane (husband John); her grandchildren, John Murnane (wife Holly) and Lauren Castro (husband Gregory); and her great-grandchildren, Gregory Castro Jr., Jackie Murnane, and David Castro.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Nathan Emmett Ray; parents, William Ebeling and Gertrude Neumann; her son, Steven Scott Ray; and her grandson, Nathan Murnane.
Evelyn will be laid to rest in Virginia Beach at a later date, where she will be reunited with her beloved Nathan. Her memory will live on in the hearts of her family and friends, who will forever cherish the warmth, wisdom, and love she shared with them.
May she rest in peace, surrounded by the music she loved and the family she cherished.
